Rather than tie up the W.A.Y.S. thread I started this post...Urb's been through the mill, now Ron69 is going without his coffee, and I'm living out of boxes and cooking in a crock-pot , so I can move it when the painter comes.

Ha! I've been working on houses (4)since we've been married. We get one fixed and end up moving. We have moved out of some really great houses. It's looking like this one might be finished in time for us to go into the nursing home. In April we will have a roof put up for a back porch and I will be putting down the deck and screening it. Next will be pouring new concrete steps in the front. I have plenty of inside work to do until then.

We did a 3 month kitchen remodel in 2001. We used a propane camp stove and a microwave in the dining room for the duration.

Well that sounds like you brought it on yourself. If I understand Herb's situation, he had a water situation that requires structural repairs, and decided to have a bit of a remodel done while they were at it. I may have that wrong, though.

Some of it was because I started it, but usually it was a repair that just kept going. The kitchen started because a sewer line broke right under the kitchen slab. Jackhammers and dust anyway, so we decided to make it a kitchen just like in the magazine. Another major project was because of a busted water heater. Had a small electrical fire that became another project.

Right Urb, my ordeal began with a busted water heater, like Ron. Our laundry/kitchen floor was one long sheet of vinyl, so I figured while the insurance company was kicking in for the floor, why not take care of the whole deal, and only go through this once. This would be a snap, if the wife and I hadn't collected so much STUFF over the last 40 plus years...I found things we haven't used in the thirty-three years we've been in this house, and she still says we might need it someday!

I have to work around piles of stuff. It's good stuff, but too much. The barn and 2 sheds are full of mostly good stuff. It makes everything 4 times as hard. Just a whole lot of clutter. We're trying to work a deal with a local shop to sell it off. If we threw it out in one garbage bag per week it would take 2 or 3 years to get rid of it all.

Same here with the wife...I cannot count how many treadmills and stair climbers she insisted she need over the years, only to have them collect dust. We have a huge treadmill in the bedroom that really needs to go, an inversion table in the garage that we do not need...but that is going.
And boatloads of other crap...going to work on the garage a bit today and put stuff on Offer up and or off to Goodwill.

I think that there is at least one conclusion we can draw, as much as women differ, they still have certain identifying traits. Maybe we should tell the Supreme Court?

I dare to beat that!

I boxed up 400 lbs of cook books last week, and 300 lbs of that was Christmas cook books, never cracked!

I have a rule for accumulation. Other than tools, books, and the obvious...pipes and tobacco, if I don't use it for 3 years, it goes away. It works well for me, but I dont necessary like "things," and clutter makes my OCD go nuts.

My cousin prepared for going to Uganda with her husband to run an orphanage, every time she wore hanging clothes she reversed the hanger, and after 9 months, anything that was not reversed went off to the thrift store. A tougher gal than me though, I still have my highly prized trucker hats, old cowboy hats, 30 year plus T-shirts, and the Satin Jacket that was awarded when I hauled swinging meat.

I should toss more stuff. The greatest “tossing” of my life was when I first moved out here. Been 36 years in a large house and had to get out swiftly after a really quick sale. Filled TWO 30’ haul-aways. Lots of “good” stuff, too. Record collection, tape recorders, books, etc., etc. I don’t miss it.

If I wore hats, I wouldn't count those. I have sweaters that my grandma made me when I was younger, sentimental items, and dress clothes. I call those my courtroom attire 🤣 T-shirts don't last me more than an a year. And those are my "good ones." Most "things" don't make it to the 3 year mark anyway. When my head is playing games with me I clean and organize stuff to keep busy. I'll pitch something in the trash can in a heart beat.

You hauled male strippers? Where to? I've got the packrat gene. Got it from Dad. I pitched a lot of stuff in this move, of necessity, but I still have too much. I'm one of those "but that'll come in handy someday" guys.

I’m with Urbino. Mom and Dad were 12 and 13 when the Great Depression hit. Throwing stuff away was not an option. I was born the year the Depression officially “ended” and I guess I got the disease.

When I think of Chris Ledoux's "This old hat", mine does not compare to his storytelling, but I received the Jacket and the Bailey 5X Beaver after many years of close calls on the road, insane hours, and once helped a CHP officer rescue a family that had their car torn apart in a nasty wreck in the San Joaquin valley on a foggy, zero visibility night (1982) that prompted the boss to recognize me with the jacket, hat, and boots (Tony Lamas long gone). Ydelia's parents are also long gone, mom died in the wreck, but she is doing well and her own kids are successful, we keep in touch as does the retired CHP officer...I still have the trucker ballcap that I wore that night...kinda relates to the song though.

You all are making me feel inadequate. My wife and I went from a 30x50 ft double wide to a 16x40 mini home. A 10x16 front porch and a 10x30 enclosed "catio". 30 years of accumulation thinned out so we would have living space. Some of you may remember my post in December 2021, in that year I moved my Mother in law into a retirement home (had to thin out a lot there),my Sister in law from her five acre home with workshop to her SO's place with a smaller shop (had a bit to thin out there), My other Sister in law passed away and her husband sold/threw out/gave away almost everything (I was in the middle of that since he PO'd most everyone else). Then my own troubles and subsequent move. Things don't matter much anymore. I gave away a 30ft 1974 Rv and was absolutely proud when the young man started it and drove it home. My wife and I no longer smoke indoors, but the "catio" is covered as well as the front porch so we can enjoy a smoke in the rain as well as the sun. Now just finding time, that's the real bother.

Simplicity can be its own reward. I know a lot of people would like to be able to downsize to something like that. They just can't let go of their stuff.

I've helped other folks downsize, or do cleanouts when someone passed, at least three or four times over the years. Each time I've come home with a pickup load of things I "MIGHT NEED SOMEDAY", so some of the clutter around here is my own making. Most of my horde is tools or good hardwood, things that I thought I would use after I retired...so far that hasn't happened. I think I do this because I tossed so many Good things when I purchased my first house...baseball cards from the late fifties, D.C.comics from the silver age, fell by the wayside as I became a man...sometimes it okay to remain a child! Got a call from the flooring company yesterday, the flooring is at the shop, and we'll be there on the 21st...then the painter comes, and once the water heater, range, fridge, dishwasher and compactor are back in place, we can rebuild our lives, and maybe do a bit of downsizing along the way.
