Looking for help to zero in on an initial Virginia recommendation. I’m really sensitive to tongue-bite and have pretty much confined myself to the only tabac so far that treats me well: Sutliff Z92. But I’d like to try non-aro Virginia and am about to put in an order. Any help to find a mild but flavorful non-aro Virginia to get me started would be appreciated.

Hmm. Are we talking a pure VA here, or just anything VA-dominant?

Pure, to start. Needs to be mild.

A possible place to start would be Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices. Great pure VA tobacco and although I’m not prone to tongue bite, I can still tell ones that may have a propensity for it and this isn’t one.

I wish I could help, but I am bad at taking notes on what produced tongue bite and what has not on fresh purchases.
I can say with certainty that aged tobaccos will help in that regard. PM me your address and I can dig out some stuff with some age. I just may have some aged Virginias that you are considering buying and you can do a side by side comparison.

Pure, to start. Needs to be mild. Okay. I asked because I was thinking of recommending Luxury Bullseye Flake, which is a VA/Per with just enough cavendish in it to keep it from biting anybody. (As far as I've heard, anyway.) A touch of cavendish generally seems to do that. Pure Virginias are hard to predict for any specific person. Everybody's pH is different. I'll put Union Square from GLP at the top of my list. I'll also second 507c as good stuff, and inexpensive. You could also try Peter Heinrichs Golden Sliced. Those are all flakes, which I tend to favor. If you don't like flakes, Amphora Virginia and Capstan Gold Ready Rubbed are good ribbons(ish), at opposite ends of the price spectrum. I believe all of those are pretty available at the moment.

Cornell & Diehl's Yorktown is a pure Virginia, but will still bite if you puff it too fast.

I've found a minimum of 5 years for that bite to lessen enough for an enjoyable smoke.

Virginias, even aged Virginias are gonna nip at you if go at them fast and hard. So many aro smokers look for that rush of flavor they're used to, and pain is there reward. The flavor of a good Virginia really unfolds when you just barely keep the pipe going. Listed above I saw Union Square, it's a really good va, and yes, the older the better. Check out the entire Fog City offerings from G.L. Peace...you'll find some mouthwatering Virginia there. Good Luck!

Capstan is always a good choice for a straight Virginia. Most Virgina's can bit if you smoke too fast.

Personally, I have found that the roof of my mouth and tongue get irritated when I am smoking too fast or with too many re-lights trying to finish the end of the bowl. I have always equated it to heat, especially when trying to hard to finish every piece of tobacco to the end. Tongue leather is the condition you find yourself in after a weekend pipe show haha.

Yorktown is my go to straight VA. THE luxury flakes nip at me from time to time, even with a few years on them. I've never had that issue with Yorktown.
I smoke a lot of straight VA's from a lot of different producers, but that one gets smoked the most and is pretty forgiving. Bonus, you can buy it bulk

And when I sip the aged fog city blends there is no tongue bite… even fresh, tongue bite is mitigated with sipping.
