Only for some, Ed.
I think a better question might be “How many pipes do you SMOKE?” For that has turned out to be fewer and fewer. Three in fact. Two Pete Houses and one Pete Pub. Certainly not enough for the recommended week rotation. Problem is, when I give them a break and smoke something else it’s usually a less satisfying experience. The solution is to add a few more large Pete system pipes. That’s my current goal.

I have about 30. Probably ten get smoked on a weekly basis.

I don’t know how many I have, over 200 for sure, the vast majority are meerschaum. I just bought 4 more in the last week or so. I’m willing to admit it’s irrational from a utilitarian sense, but many are antiques and I enjoy collecting them. I regularly smoke 4 or 5.

I'm probably somewhere in the 90's for number of pipes. I probably smoke 3 or 4 on any given week, but change those 3 or 4 out every few weeks. I am guilty of having a few in my collection that are still new in box or unsmoked by me.
Every once and a while I think of selling off those that are sitting around, but always seem to hold off on it. Smoking Pipes has tempted me with their 'send us your pipes, we'll make you an offer' pamphlets, but for what they would probably give me in credit I could sell them to an individual and feel better about it.
In the end, I'm sure that the number will go up and down over the years (probably trending up more than down), but I'm sure my "last pipe" will be some to come.
YMMV,
RSD

A fair question Bob. I smoke them ALL, in rotations of 10 or 11. depending on size. Once they holler "cleaning time", do so, put away, bring out another one. Been doing same for long time. Usually when at the chats around 11pm Eastern, either couple cobs or small meers...need the space

Too many, quite a few are like pieces of art or a reminder of history from a bye gone era, I just like pipes, expensive or cheap, they all have a place somewhere.

When I picked up the pipe again in 2013 I spent over $4k in the next two years. I have somewhat over 200. I smoke about 90% of them, though many get infrequent attention. I still see pipes that I have to have, but living on Social Security helps me control the urge.

I can see myself culling the herd, and using the money for artisan pipes, and transitioning from accumulator to collector.

Pease's post hits all too close to home for me. It's been a while since I've counted them up but I believe I'm just a bit north of 100 pipes. While I do smoke them all in various rotations of rotations, I also have the emotional attachments to certain pipes from friends, my grandpa's pipes, my wife's great grandfather's pipes, and others. I've not been able to find the second briar pipe that I ever bought for the past month. It's an unfinished Savinelli 904KS (Dublin, "Yachtsman shape") and quite frequently, about once a day or every other, it comes to my mind that I can't find that pipe and it's been stressing me out. I love that pipe! Although I feel like I could cull the herd a bit and get rid of maybe some of my cheaper pipes to make room for new, they just all have too much emotional attachment for me at this point. I'd rather collect them all and periodically bring out those that haven't seen a smoke in quite some time. I even smoke my "the smoke" and Venturi plastic pipes. They're made of phenolic resin and you can just wash them out entirely in the sink. Clays, cobs, ceramic, meerschaum, plastic, briar, pear, rosewood, walnut. No morta yet, but with this "condition" I've certainly planned on buying one. And let's not even get started on cellaring tobacco...

I have no Idea. I have not counted my pipes. It's probably and good idea to get a count and get them down on paper.
Thanks for sharing.

Nearing 200 around here. Seems like more on dusting days. Many mark a time in life, some bring a friend or loved one to mind. Some were gifts, from the wife or her folks, and then there's a collection of Petes, still in their boxes, that belonged to an old Pal. Clays, Meers, cobs, and briars...all have a story to tell, even the beaters.

I have six (2 MM and four briars) but I'm still pretty green in the hobby. Give me time and I'm sure I'll get there

Looking forward to seeing Greg at the Las Vegas show, he is a really interesting guy, and a humble person. That is a nice benefit as a pipe smoker, you can rub elbows with heroes in the community.

Two comments:
One is, a person that knows exactly how many pipes he has, probably does not have that many.
Second, I know I have exactly as many pipes as I want. Exactly.

Still holding at 53, broken down into 10-11 per rotation. Has worked for many years

I had 30 when this thread first started. I think think I have one less now. Gave away two and gained one. Getting ready to sell about a half dozen. I think I did have about 70 at one time. I decided I would rather have a large tobacco collection over a large pipe collection.
