I found a nearly excellent 1996 hardback copy of Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (Pantheon Books, 1st Edition) today at my beloved used bookstore. As soon as I saw it, I was going to buy it regardless of the price. Wasn't cheap, but I got it for $14. This baby is hard to find in this copy, this condition.
Also picked up a small mass print paperback copy of Anton Chekov's Plays in Penguin Classic copy.
This local used bookstore is rather large and they tend to also get many rare prints and entire collections, one of which I really want but which costs a pretty penny. In fact, it costs 100,000 pretty pennies. The entire 16 book collection from Folio Society of Charles Dickens. They are HUGE leatherbound books, many of them still wrapped in plastic in their book inserts. $999. They just got it in a month ago and I'm not sure how long it will stick around.
EDIT: (I just hunted down the same 1st Edition 1996 print of this book on Abebooks from a seller, and they want $40 + shipping. I'm a very happy camper. A few in like new and "very good" condition are selling for $50+)

When we lived in Houston and before we had a child, I used to go to used bookstores. One by Rice university had a first edition of Scott's Ivanhoe, 3 leather bound volumes. I wanted to throw that 1600 bucks at the old guy so hard. Still regret not doing it.

Couldn't help myself, and just ordered a new copy of 1999 Pevear translation of The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol, and the Pevear translation of Dostoevsky's The Eternal Husband and Other Stories. My to be read list here on my shelves is up to about 75 books so I better knock it off. Sometime soon. Nearly ordered this one as well. Novels, Tales, Journeys: The Complete Prose of Alexander Pushkin (Vintage Classics) also a Pevear translation. I will have all the Pevear translations!

I've been working my way through CS Lewis starting with his apologetics books the past few weeks. 'Working' may be too strong of a word though, I've thoroughly enjoyed each book I've read so far. Currently reading The Four Loves.

Pax Romana by Adrian Goldsworthy. An academic tome on the reality of what life was like under the Romans. Interesting, but still a slog. Most of the average person's understanding of Rome is very simplified while reality extremely complex.

I was not there, but I do recall the context now. There were many douchenozzles in the arena that election. Dukakis in the tank is a hilarious image that is imprinted in my brain.

Any Robert Parker fans? Spenser or Jesse Stone novels.
Lots of coffee drinking, not much pipe smoking. That I can find.

The Ultimate Cigar Book by Richard Carleton Hacker. The latest edition and a fascinating read. I can't believe it took me so long to read it. There's so much I've been doing wrong for over 50 years.

Just ordered a 1999 Penguin Classics copy of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. I'll have to get Ulysses and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man at some point, as I've not yet read anything by Joyce. This one has been on the back of my mind since exbenedict said he was reading it some months ago.
AbeBooks currently has a signed copy of Ulysses that he signed and dedicated to H.G. Wells right now for $88,400.
