Re-reading Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, written in 1953 and first read by me 10 years later. Interesting store still. Pipe smoking still exists, though tobacco is very expensive and hard to get. But there was an ash disposal unit on a secretary's desk. I don't think Asimov could imagine a world without pipes. And this is set 5000 years in the future. The population has increased to 8 billion people on earth causing people to live in the Caves of Steel, buildings with no windows. The main character is shocked to see sunshine and fresh air for the first time. By the way, the far future, almost unimaginable population will be reached this weekend. Welcome to Earth.
