Don't ever, EVER, open a jug of mystery fluid and sniff it to see what it is. I was helping my elderly parents clear out a bunch of miscellaneous paint, stain, solvent and lawn, garden and automotive chemicals. I saw two plastic jugs that looked like milk jugs and had a yellowish liquid in them. They looked like they had been leaking from the cap for some time. I could not read the label on the one I picked up. Like an idiot, I opened the cap and took a whiff. Like getting hit in the face with a 2x4. Muriatic acid. Fortunately I only got a partial lungful. But I am wheezing and feel pretty crappy. My throat is sore and my chest hurts. About made me black out. After the fact I noticed that every metal surface within a few feet of those jugs was rusted. The ingredients for a fire were all in close proximity, so I am glad I cleared the shelves, but I should have been more cautious. Darwin Award for the day goes to me!

Muriatic acid is no joke! Take it from a driver with Hazmat certification as a technician. There are things a lot nastier on the industrial scale, but this ranks at the top of hazards for the general public.
I hope the symptoms dissipate quickly.

I made you snort acid from a thousand miles away? Even we degenerate old hippies never snorted it, that I can recall.
Or am I getting confused again?

I used to, as part of my business, refine precious metals. This involved many concentrated acids and other chemicals. Even with a proper ventilation hood, I still had a few boneheaded moments where I caught a full blast of fumes. I always healed up fine and fast afterwards, but the shock factor of it happening always lasted longer. Really messed up smoking for me for a few days when it happened too.

I did something stupid while redistilling some phenol in grad school. Put 2 perfectly symmetrical burns on my forearms.

Did that once with Anhydrous Ammonia. I worked with the stuff regularly at the time, I knew better yet I still wasn't smart enough not to sniff the jug to be sure I wasn't mixing chemicals. (We used several industrial chemicals in that shop and one doesn't want to mix them!) 25 years later and my lungs still hurt when I think about that colossally stupid mistake! Glad you're doing better Don.

Glad you're doing better Don. That will wake you up. I spilled some silver nitrate on the floor in the lab storeroom and the teacher told me to clean it up. The floor was vinyl asbestos and I started with soap and water. No effect. Neither did bleach or alcohol. I finally found something that worked, ammonium hydroxide. Of course it took the top layer off the tile too. Took me hours running outside to breath.

If you live long enough, you have a “Hey Bubba hold my beer while you check this out” moment. I had some moments hauling hazmat where some product started off-gassing…. Acrid and attention getting.
In hindsight, I should have used better judgment, especially being trained…. It is what it is.
I used to haul inhalation hazard gases that added no odors as a warning…. The reason they added no odorizer is because the f you smelled it you were already dead!
Never figured out why them small cylinders never travelled in airtight Pelican cases, fortunately I never experienced a valve failure.

A Pelican case is watertight, not airtight and certainly not under pressure. You would die, but 2 minutes later.

I meant pelican case type…. There are some cases that look the same but offer seals that get the job done.
It should be the industry standard for hazmat transportation, suited people packaging products of that nature, suited people that receive it.
Sadly, that is not “sexy” and wokester guv officials are more concerned about political correctness than safety.

Sadly, that is not “sexy” and wokester guv officials are more concerned about political correctness than safety. They need to spend a month on the job. The biggest problem with the current government officials is that none of them have any experience in the industries they regulate. Besides the woke BS and being chosen for the most weirdness points.

When the feds finally got there they were offered a glass of water. It was an awkward scene.
