Hi all,
I've just bought an estate Savinelli Roma Lucite R model 305 and wonder whats the best way to sanitise the mouthpiece?
Thanks...

Welcome to the Patch. All my total 53 pipes have lucite, even if some originally had vulcanite. Just cannot be bothered with the time to de-oxidize same. clean rag & rubbing alcohol on stems keeps plenty clean enough, have done for many years now

I agree with Ed here. I haven't done any systematic research, but I'm much inclined to think an acrylic stem would be easier to sanitize, and certainly easier to maintain, than a vulcanite.

Hello and welcome! Lucite (Acrylic) stems are so easy to maintain. I personally use dish detergent and water to clean them when I get them on a used pipe. Sometimes just glass cleaner and a paper towel. If there are any dull spots, I find they polish up nicely with jeweler’s cloth.

Anytime I get an estate pipe with an acrylic stem, I soak it in warm water and a dab of dish soap, then rinse and run a few pipe cleaners through to remove any soap residue. Polish it off with a cloth/buffing wheel as needed. No issues to date.

Don't use pure alcohol like Everclear on acrylic stems. It will start internal cracks. Use below 100 proof rum or soap and water.

Warm, soapy water as others have said would probably be best but I tend to just use alcohol and pipe cleaners. Depending on where you bought your pipe from in the first place, it may have already been fully cleaned for you. Such as, if you bought it from SmokingPipes, or BlueRoomBriars, some place that refurbished it before selling it. Different of course if you bought it all filthy on some auction site.

I can't answer your question, but I can welcome you to the forum. Any pipes that I've bought have been plunged into boiling water for a few minutes and then sprayed with kitchen cleaner before giving them a good rinse. Now I think about it, I think I rinsed in the boiling water. I'm still alive.
