Greetings fellow pipe smokers! Our Pipe club meeting is wedged in between Good Friday and Easter this year, a contemplative time for many, so even if you cannot attend, it is a good time to smoke a bowl! If you can make it, we will be meeting at 12PM at Madurostix in Mesa. Lee Pattison contacted me, him and his wife Gail run suna.petfinder.com Sanctuary for Unwanted and Neglected Animals, a pet rescue sanctuary in Silver Springs NY. One of they ways they help cover expenses is Lee assembles pipe Retort kits and sells them, any money made is for the animal rescue operations as he has done so for many years. He sent us one free of charge, and asked if there was someone in the club that would like to take possession of one in the club, use it and give a demonstration to the club. One person will end up with it with the catch that they will have to take it home and use it, and report back to the next monthly pipe club meeting they attend. When done properly, there is little risk but it does involve boiling flammable Everclear (He recommends using rubbing alcohol as it is less flammable...which is provided in the kit along with wintergreen alcohol that can be used as a pipe sweetener.) He provides the instructions on how to perform the procedure. Whoever accepts the challenge will do it at the meeting without any ignition source, and can describe what happens on that step of the procedure. For further reading on a pipe retort and what it is, I hand it off to Steve Laug's excellent article: rebornpipes.com/2012/10/17/what-is-a-pipe-retort-and-how-it-is-used/If after the demonstration, the members are impressed with the kit and would like to buy one I can arrange for a group buy. If more than one person would like to volunteer, we will have a card drawing, high card wins. Hope to see you there! Arizona Pipe club .com.

Thanks, Bob!
We always have a good time. Pretty weird to boil Everclear...pretty safe if everything is contained, but spill it around an open flame and it emits invisible flames. Ask me how I know!

CaneRodPiper, who did pipe restoration/repair for several years before he got so much work he couldn't keep up, has a video on YouTube about how to assemble a retort.

I have a retort setup. I use boiling water on an induction stove.

In my experience, it is pretty effective on a heavily ghosted pipe. Mike Myers ozone treatment I preferred more, but Mikey retired.
