Hello everyone, I am wondering how much cake you allow to build up in your bowl, how you do this? I tend to thoroughly clean my bowl out after each smoke. Also, do you allow cake from different tobacco to collect and whats the advantages of cake generally? Loads of questions....about 'cake'! Take care of yourselves, its all going mad out there!!!

I’m opposed to putting any baked goods in my pipes, let alone allowing them to build up…
Anyway, I can only speak to meerschaum pipes, which I keep fairly cake free and have no concerns if I remove it completely. I don’t do this for any reason other than I don’t want the volume of my bowls to decrease. It really doesn’t make a difference in smoking or pipe longevity either way. I have the feeling though that you are smoking briar pipes and I believe they may require a different approach, which I’m sure others will chime in with soon.

I give my bowls a rub down with a pipe cleaner after each smoke. I'm not a frequent smoker, but even over the years, I have a thin layer, but nothing like I see in some antique shops.

I don't let more than a mm accumulate. Cake protects the bowl and makes the pipe smoke better to a point.

Zarnicky never hearing about smoking cake. I eating cake from bowl and especially liking strawberry shortcake. No buildup at Zarnicky house because I usually licking bowl after eating cake. Spaghetti good in bowl too. Zarnicky having big bowl.

I've had this same question Tweed, mostly smoking MM cobs but have a couple of 'nicer' briars that I'm learning to maintain. I mostly follow the same process as Legend. Do y'all run your pipe cleaners dry or do you use alcohol or is that just for when there's too much cake buildup?

I'm just getting the moisture out of the stem and shank. Other than knocking the ash out, I don't do anything to the bowl.

I run a pipe cleaner down the stem during a smoke and after. Bend it in half after the smoke and swab the bowl, shake the pipe out. Aggressive cleaning with a reamer happens on a few pipes, but this method works on 95% of the pipes.
