So I have been looking for a pipe. It happens to be a Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation burnt sienna (not that it matters). As Ive performed searches, stock doesnt seem to change. Do pipes get "released" or shipped out to retailers sporadically or at certain intervals? Or does it really depend on a specific pipe maker?
Just curious

A pipe like that is probably made in one small batch, one time only. A maker like Peterson and Savinelli has the same pipe lines for years but even they discontinue colors and shapes. When you see a pipe that you have to have, but it immediately or forget about it. You can set up a watch on eBay to get notifications if any show up. Good luck.

I don’t know, I think I would expect that to come back in stock. Stokkebye turns out a lot of pipes, and that one doesn’t sound like it’s a special edition or anything. Burnt Sienna is one of their regular lines, isn’t it?

Most pipes you see on a pipe site is just literally one pipe. You buy that pipe, it's out of stock for good. There are only certain series of cheaper pipes which we call "factory" pipes which are made in batches. While Erik Stokkebye's pipes are made by Peder Jeppesen, I believe he mostly makes only one offs or a few in the series that look similar but will have varying stems, stem ferrules, and minor differences typically. I currently see just one left of an Argang Burnt Sienna bent Dublin at SmokingPipes. The rest of that series have sold. Erik may commission more in that series to be made by Peder, not sure. But to clarify how this works. There are currently, for example, 4 of the Erik Stokkebye Argang Dark Porter bent brandy shape pipes listed on SmokingPipes. They each look similar but the bowl carvings are clearly different and hand made. These are not factory pipes, and those are the only 4 pipes they have. each one you click, slightly different, is what you buy. Once it's bought, that pipe is gone.

That being the case, you might want to jump on one if it trips your trigger. Neerup produces a lot of fine pipes, but Peder's pipes he has made are far fewer.

Unless something has changed, P&C doesn't really do individual item pics. It's why I don't buy pipes from them.

Unless I'm missing a P&C being mentioned, I was only talking about how SmokingPipes works and they are individual photos of every briar pipe. I wouldn't buy pipes from P&C. I've had too many bad experiences.

That struck me as a statement about pipe sites in general, not just SP.

I see what you mean. Outside of Pipesandcigars sort of being the exception, most pipes tend to be individually photographed.

I need to look for those Stanwells. My hands are much tougher since moving to the country than they were when I first got those pipes. Plus, things keep slipping out of my hands now.

If you commission a pipe the carver will often do two at the same time in case something happens to one they still have a fall back. It could be a simple as a hidden flaw when they are 50% done or something. The pisser for me is they keep the nicer of the pipes if both make it through and then have one to sell , usually at a higher price point. I would rather have the option to buy the nicer one but I am splitting hairs now.
