Hi all,
So, I have found my number one blend, Presbyterian Mix is, in my opinion of course, just exquisite! But I am curious if someone can tell me what it is that I like about it? Daft question? Maybe, but I'm not experienced enough to differentiate between Latakia this, and Virginia that. So, if you could help me identify what it is that floats my boat re Pres Mix I'd appreciate it.
Thanks...

It’s only a guess, but it is likely the bright Virginias that you are enjoying. Presbyterian is a little more complicated than just that, but it’s definitely what’s carrying the blend.
If that’s the case, you might also really like Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend and Orlik Golden Slice, among others.

OGS doesn't have any latakia in it, unlike the other 2. In a lot of blends like Presbyterian that aren't really "latakia" blends, the latakia in them serves to temper the Virginias. Tweedandbriar might love OGS if he tried it. I'm all for him giving it a shot. But, based just on Presbyterian, I would think Scottish blends in general would be a safer bet.

His question was what people think he might be liking about Presbyterian. He didn’t ask for suggestions on other tobaccos. I wasn’t suggesting copy blends, but rather blends that rely on brighter Virginias as the backbone. Granted Mixture is similar to Presbyterian. If he tried Orlik Golden Slice and found the same thing that drew him to Presbyterian, then it would be the VA aspect for sure.

I wonder is it the more subtle presence of latakia, which gives it that smokey flavour rather that a kick-in-the-teeth full-on campfire amount of latakia. That's what did it for me. Presbyterian is one of my favourites, but it seems to be out of production - at least, it's no longer available in the UK. That said, tweedandbriar - since you're in the UK, where did you pick this up?

To be fair, my question was also designed to know what other blends might appeal to me in the event of my establishing what I like about Pres Mix

To be fair, my question was also designed to know what other blends might appeal to me in the event of my establishing what I like about Pres Mix in addition to the two I suggested, a third that might be worth trying and that should be fairly easy for you to find is Gawith Hoggarth No. 25 Mixture if you want to try something that showcases the Latakia side of things a bit more, but still has bright Virginias in it, it’s quite nice.

You might like Rattray's Red Rapparee which also is Virginia based with Turkish and a pinch of Latakia.

Presbyterian is a lighter English. I enjoy it, but there are so many different English blends with different varieties and mixes of Latakia I just don't get to it too often. I do think of it as an all day English, though, as the amount of Latakia is not great.

Red Rapparee is a good suggestion, especially for your side of the pond. Also, Early Morning Pipe, maybe?
