Our old washed kicked the bucket yesterday. We got the ole gal back in 2014, so I guess for a 500'00 GE, we got all we should expect out of it. I spent some time online yesterday evening, and headed to a small local shop we've done business with for years. we told ourselves we were going to be the usual penny pinchers we aways are and go with a good machine like an LG, a Worldpool, or a Maytag, but the price point on those three was so near the Speed Queen, the Speed Queen is what we ended up with. Online these rascals sound like the superhero of washing machines, so it'll likely outlive us, but that's okay I'm looking forward to the wife's smile when she puts that thing into action.

A new washer is a good thing. Many years ago I knew a girl that everyone called “Speed Queen”. I don’t know for sure, but I bet she did laundry quite thoroughly and unusually fast.

Our Maytag front load set is still chugging since 2005… knock on wood.😉

A year and a half ago we got a Speed Queen. Hardly any electronics. I’m in IT, and I hate superfluous computers in any of my appliances. Like, “why”? Anyway, wife loves it. Great machine.

Didn’t want to create a quote train. But I agree fewer electronics is less stuff to break.

You guys are crazy! The fancy gizmo’s can alert you to when you need to order soap and automatically send an order off to Amazon. And with a Wi-Fi enabled washer it can herd your info to sellers, and it only costs a couple grand more. As JB would say… C‘one on man!

Got a Speed Queen, with no gizmos, didn’t know there were 2 models on agaitor speed. If we weren’t old folks the one we got wouldn’t cut it, too little agation, if we still had the kids with real dirty clothes it would have been a bad mistake. We have the Speed Queen dryer, so far we’re good

My old Kenmore labors on. Brad's comments about kids clothes reminds me how I usually have to run my wash through twice to get all the dirt out and that is with an extra rinse cycle. Our water is so hard the detergent lingers. Forget about buying water softener or borax here. Not available. Always sold out.

I have always wondered if you can run a softener on a septic system without too much hassle? I love my water softener and RO unit, money well spent.

We have Whirlpool W&D. Both have some electronic components. The washer is a real pain with a bunch of safety features that make it take longer to run a load because it spends 15 minutes "sensing" before it starts washing. It was all they had at the store about 10 years ago. But it's still going fine. Every other washer had more gimmicks than this one. The dryer is from 2005 and it just has a moisture sensor. Only issue it had in 18 years is the timer went out, (which I replaced for $25 about 10 years ago and the moisture sensor in the drum got knocked off when my wife decided to dry her shoes. Had to pay for that. Anyway, I've always had good luck with Whirlpool.

Why would a water softener cause a problem with a septic system? Just curious. Our water is softer than we are used to.

That’s why I had the question mark.😉
I just wondered if the salt could build up and settle in the tank, or the salt could leach into the aquifer if you are on well water. I know that even though you should not put certain things down the drain on city sewers, it is less forgiving on a septic system.
When I met my wife she thought that the garbage disposal for mulching all and every food scrap, egg shells, pour grease down the drain etc…floss into the toilet, etc…
If she was a farmers daughter and did that she would have been ran off the farm.

Don’t put grease in your septic. Wife bottles all her grease and it goes in the garbage, took 15 yrs before I had to have septic pumped, also coffee grounds don’t go in, that’s what we do,

Yeah, Grease goes into the Pyrex measure cup when it’s hot, and the quart plastic milk jug gets it before it solidifies.

The garbage disposal is OK, to a point. Grease is a no-no. Don't know about the salt. With the amount of rain we get the salt would probably not be a problem. I would probably run the backflush in the line that goes directly to the creek that the washer uses instead of the septic tank. Most people don't have that option.

A greywater line seems to make a lot of sense, especially if one is building from scratch.

A greywater line seems to make a lot of sense, especially if one is building from scratch. Yeah, this one runs out onto some rocks and filters through 50 feet of vegetation before it hits the creek. Judging by the vegetation, it's all good. Almost had the shower and bathtub run to the pond, but the plumber had to get to another job.

My mom's Kenmore washer failed after nearly thirty years but her dryer is still going strong. Meanwhile, I have a Whirlpool that needs to be repaired for the second time in three years.

Funny story..
Mark and Jim were a couple of bachelor buddies that shared a house together, their dryer went down and they looked to the classifieds. Lo and behold..."good working dryer, you take for free" Jim brought it home, hooked it up and Mark said 'I'm first!" as he had clothes in the washing machine that needed to be dried. After the dry cycle, he pulled his clothes out and everything was shredded, his Levi's were like spaghetti Seems that part of the drum worked loose, and the metal worked like a fabric disposal. It was all pretty funny.
