Thanks!

That's beyond my ken, but we do have a few folks around here who might have ideas. You could also reach out to YouTuber canerodpiper. He knows a lot about pipe repair and restoration and seems to be happy to answer questions.

Pipe mud made from ashes, water or milk. I add honey to mine. In fact, I used milk and honey in a batch and it seemed harder than the surrounding areas. Experiment.

I have always wondered if cigar ash has something special in it. Why not cigarette ash or weed ash or pine ash, poplar, etc.
I have used a few things over the years. I bought some clay powder once, since clay is used for pipes I thought, why not. It worked OK, no idea if it will hold up. I used something from Aristocob once, that stuff was decent. Powdered charcoal is a fovorite.
I use cigar ash but it's a pain to get for me. Waterglass is a good binder. When I am in a hurry I will use powdered charcoal or weed ash.

I've tried to get pipe ash to the same consistency as cigar ash with no luck. I used wood ash and it was too light. Cigar ash is the best and luckily they make cheap cigars. If you don't have a cigar lounge near you.

I have a recipe i got from someone online (wish to give credit where it is due):
1gm DAP plaster of Paris 0.5gm table salt 0.6gm activated charcoal powder
Slow add water until consistency of moist clay. Seems to work well for raising bottoms but I havent done walls with it yet. Will have to see what briar is left. May be JB weld for the win on the more damaged ones with the pipe mud afterwards...
