Yesterday I received an antique pipe collection that I, of course, bought for the meerschaum pipes in it. There are a number of briar pipes, but only one caught my eye. I’ve read a number of online guides to Peterson pipes but I’m still left with questions and since I know there are some Peterson fans here, I thought I would ask. 1. from the dating guides I read, this appears to be pre-1915. There is no country of manufacture stamping on it and the “P” is the very first version. Is that correct? 2. What does the number 3 stand for? 3. What is the shape called? 4. The stem is obviously missing, which stem would it have had anD any ideas on the best place to get a replacement? It is dirty as you can see, but it’s actually in great shape. It’s barely been smoked and from the sharpness of the bowl stampings I doubt it’s ever been polished or worked on in any way. I’m feeling the urge to restore it.

The "3" stands for an integer quantity that's greater than 2 and less than 4. You're welcome.
That seems like a really nice find in a lot buy. The stampings being so crisp and clear almost makes me suspicious. Almost.

Yes I do have the Peterson book by Irwin. I have to run out the door with the wife to ensure domestic tranquility, or I would take a look.
It might be a two pipe adventure later! Definitely a Pete from days gone by!

The stampings being so crisp and clear almost makes me suspicious. Almost. I called it a collection, but it wasn’t really. It was from an estate and it appears that someone put a bunch of pipes and pipe parts in a box in maybe the 1920’s and it stayed closed until very recently when I bought it. There is a lot in it way cooler than this, including four never used/installed amber stems, a stunning skull meerschaum pipe from the late 19th century among others and some of the coolest and oldest corn cob pipes I’ve ever seen. Most of the briars are CPF. This group was not picked over or handled by anyone who knew anything about pipes.

Urb is a suspicious ursine. I have NO doubt the Peterson stampings are original. That’s a great find.
When you get it cleaned up and decide you wanna sell it…

We have to be, Bob. We have poor eyesight.
I don't know "CPF", Ted.

As for replacing a missing stem, I would copy this thread and email Peterson pipes and ask for guidance in getting a stem made.

Everything in that link is “out of stock”, I know that Peterson’s is owned by Laudisi, but I figured it is better to get the word from the horse’s mouth. Hell, they might say “send us the bowl so we can turn a correct stem for that pipe”… weirder things have happened.

My recent contacts with Peterson have given me Giussepe or Tadzio or some such and a lot of semi-literate yah-yah-tah with no substance. I hope the ‘cat has better luck.

Peterson’s used to have a factory approved repairman in the south (thinking Georgia or Alabama), he got rave reviews and his stem stock was sent from Ireland… always exceeded expectations, but reading between the lines I think he might have passed on.😢

There was, not sure if still, a Peterson pipe stem shortage. A year ago, maybe the last two, you are lucky to find a Pete stem blank. There are some of the premades that can me modified but it's a much more difficult task than say five years ago.
I am sure you will create a masterpiece from which ever way you go. Lovely pipe imho and a sweet find.

As for replacing a missing stem, I would copy this thread and email Peterson pipes and ask for guidance in getting a stem made. I have sent an email to Peterson, I’ll post an update in case anyone is interested when I hear back from them. Interestingly though, I went through my boxes of pipe stems and found seven Peterson stems, three were system stems. Then I went through my misc pipe boxes and found a few Peterson pipes, much newer ones than this one, one is a system pipe and none of the stems fit on this pipe, they were all much narrower than this pipe takes. The opening for the stem is almost as large as the bowl. I’ll be interested to see what Peterson has to say.

I got a response to my email to Peterson today, here is a copy and paste of what they said:
Hello Ted,
For stem replacement we do require that the pipe be sent back to our factory at the address below. The cost for a standard replacement stem will be €36 plus €8 shipping, invoiced upon receipt of the pipe.
Kapp & Peterson, Ltd. Unit 2B Deansgrange Business Park Kill Lane Blackrock, Co. Dublin, A94 HX50 Republic of Ireland
Please note: We have also attached a CN23 form to this email. If you are outside of the EU please print out and affix this to the package. This is unfortunately quite important, as otherwise customs and duties may be charged to you by Revenue. If you don't have access to a printer or your postal system/customs requires you to do this manually or on a seperate form, the pertinent details are as follows:
Category of Item: Returned Goods Detailed Description of Contents: Briar Pipe For Repair By Manufacturer Qty: 1 Weight: (Usually 0.2-0.3kgs with packaging) Value: €0.01 HS/Tariff Code: 96140090 Country of Origin: Ireland
Please note that the lead time for repairs can be 8 to 12 weeks.
Kind regards, Conor
So I am going to clean up the pipe, not too much, I don’t want to make it look new, just nice and ship it off to them. Then I’ll probably forget all about this until I receive it back with a shiny new Peterson stem (hopefully) in about three months.

Cool!
Nice of them to give such a detailed description of the process…. Of course not their first rodeo, and easy to click and send.
Looking forward to seeing the results!

An excellent response. Conor trumped Giussepe. Indeed, I was a bit apprehensive after reading that exchange of emails.
