I have two Roma churchwardens that have developed significant cracks. Weird.

Hey, Bob...the cracks could have started out as being invisible hairline cracks and now, through use, have obviously opened up significantly. I'm wondering about this simply being a quality control issue or if the briar wasn't completely cured. Hmmmm....

Looks too identical to be coincidence. Were they held by the stem while knocking out ashes?

Definitely not my day for Romas. This happened right after I posted the crack pics. Embers: I don’t knock out my pipes. ALways use a pic to get the dottle out.

The sort of low-hanging fruit that gives worms concussions.

I’m certainly not super briar knowledgeable, but I do know wood in general and the crack on the smooth one seems more like it started at a stress point, maybe poor handling during manufacturing. The crack on the rusticated one looks like the cracks that form during drying/curing of wood. But then to have the stem break too seems super weird. Makes me wonder how these are handled in general during manufacturing. They seem like they might have been seriously abused prior to final finishing.

I bought these together, about two years ago. They haven’t been smoked a lot. Not a great loss, since they are hardly premium pipes. But it does make me reluctant to ever buy another Roma.

That's pretty weird, Bob. Roma is usually a solid, reliable line of pipes. You may have to stop letting Eli smoke them.

I have two Roma churchwardens that have developed significant cracks. Weird. That is VERY weird. I can't imagine what would cause that.

Yep. I agree. Physical abuse needs to be ruled out. This AIN’T my doing. Cause? How ‘bout poor QC?

I would send them an email with the pictures. Any responsible retailer wants to know about genuine concerns so that they can take corrective action, lacking constructive criticism does not help the them in addressing a problem that they might be unaware of.

Agreed, Charlie, but I’m a step ahead of ya. The ‘net gives consumers a lot of power— but only if we use it.

That is nuts! They should be replaced with no questions asked. Even if they were a few years old they should be replaced. The good and the bad of todays world, you get the good. You can threaten to post that shite all over social media. I bet you will get a replacement for both or credit towards whatever you want.

Agreed, there is your credit offer. Now do you counter with anything or take it? Grabs popcorn.....
I guess I should ad my 2 cents since this is a forum:
$20 per pipe for a 3 year old Roma CW estate. A little low imo, judging by the pic you keep them in good condition. Not terribly low that you walk away. If you took it and sold the stems on ebay or a forum for, what another $10 or $20, you are probably in the estate market value range. But then the hassle of selling the stems, or just keeping them for another project down the road...

Yeah, I didn't say it was a good deal, but it was something.

I informed them of what happened; I did not ask for a replacement. I’m just gonna go for the hassle-free 40 bucks and be done with it. The stems will work with my curare darts.
