I prefer pencils for my work and am thankful to have discovered "the Bear Claw". A stout Number 2 made by Koala Tools. From China. A 4mm lead which holds its point and never breaks. Thick and triangular wood so it does not roll off of surfaces. Easy to hold in arthritic hands. An eraser which actually works and does not deteriorate as fast as others. I recommend these and they are available from Amazon. Worth the price.
What do you use?

If I'm doing a drawing for a project I use mechanical pencils on graph paper.

It is known that in the days of the Mercury and Apollo space missions, NASA was plagued with problems for writing instruments so the Astronauts could complete their work. Zero gravity and cold made pens inoperative. So, they commissioned a Space Pen. Made by the Fisher Company under patent. Cost, much dinero, señores.
Meanwhile, the Soviet Cosmonauts used a pencil which cost a a rubble or two.

They are good pens, but expensive compared to most ball point pens. Usually about $30 now. I used to have a Parker 75. That was a great pen. I don't know what happened to it. The facts about the space pen: "Facts and History of the Space Pens: The story of the Space Pen really begins with its inventor, Paul C. Fisher. Before he took to making pens, Paul worked in an airplane propeller factory during World War II. It was there that he gained valuable experience with ball bearings, knowledge that would come in handy down the road for creating ballpoints. He later went on to invent the 'universal refill' ink cartridge, which in turn led him to create the first 'Anti-Gravity' pen, patented in 1966. Although it is a popular misconception that NASA invested millions of dollars developing an anti-gravity writing instrument, the fact of the matter is that Paul had been working on the design for years and had invested roughly a million dollars into the pens development . Truth be told, in the beginning Fisher didn’t even set out to create a pen specifically for the astronauts; he was simply looking to make a great pen that worked without leaking. In the end he had developed what he considered to be the perfect pen – a pen with ink that would not be exposed to air, rely on gravity, leak or dry up, and that wrote underwater and in extreme temperatures. His breakthrough happened to be perfectly timed with the space race and he offered the pens to NASA for consideration. Two years of testing later and the Space Pen was approved to accompany the Apollo 7 astronauts into space. Despite the old joke that the Russians solved their anti-gravity writing problem by using pencils, Russian cosmonauts actually began to carry Fisher Space Pens on their missions as well, at about the same time that NASA did."

I am quite passionate about pencils, mechanical and otherwise.

I use both mechanical pencils and Ticonderoga wooden ones. I can “apportion” writing time by sharpening a set number of pencils (4 or 5) and quitting when the last one is worn down and not before.

I'm more into Sharpies. 😄
Actually, in my line of work, pencils are not allowed. Any corrections must be made with a single line-out and initialed.

My wife wrote the employees and operations manuals for the Houston blood bank, and I heard, every day, ad nauseum, who got written up each day for not following procedures. You have my sympathy.

I’m more of a pen guy. Fountain pen when practicable. I’ve got a Zebra 701 mechanical pencil and a few Ticonderogas around the house that I use when a pencil is called for.

While I do like pencils, the pencil I have been using lately is made by Apple. With wee little aftermarket tips about 1.5mm thick. I use it on a fantastic app called GoodNotes. Amazing feel to the writing and many styles of “paper” to write on. Handwriting and typescript quickly interchange. It’s become my go-to app for all sorts of creative and routine work.

I can write with a chainsaw I can write my name in the snow with no hands.😈 Like the Ozark feud that started b/c a father found his daughter’s boyfriend’s name written in the snow. “Don’t you think I can recognize my daughter’s handwriting?”

I use pencils. Much easier than writing with a feather. I collected many goose quills from the days I kept geese. I use them with India ink. Sharpened to a point of course. Not as productive as a fountain pen which I also use. Three Montblancs on hand.

My wife loves to use traditional wooden pencils and a sharpener.
I use a 0.9mm mechanical pencil. Mass market plastic with a rubber grip.

In concept I like mechanical pencils, but I break a lot of lead when using one. Ticonderoga #2 works best for me.
