In concept I like mechanical pencils, but I break a lot of lead when using one. Ticonderoga #2 works best for me. The Bear Claw pencil is worth a try. You will not go back.

I collected many goose quills from the days I kept geese. I use them with India ink. Sharpened to a point of course. Not as productive as a fountain pen which I also use. Three Montblancs on hand. How many Mont Blancs does it take to write a letter? Three different nib sizes.

I just picked up a new 10-pack of Bic mechanical pencils last weekend. I don’t often use physical writing these days if I’m being honest as I’m mostly on a computer and take notes by typing as well. When I do write in notepads, it’s often with a nice ballpoint pen. I still have a softspot for pencils. I intend to get back into writing more pencil-based notes.

Outside of typing I rarely write so the only thing I do is get signatures on invoices at work and that has to be in ink.

It is known that in the days of the Mercury and Apollo space missions.s, NASA was plagued with problems for writing instruments so the Astronauts could complete their work. ...<snip>... Meanwhile, the Soviet Cosmonauts used a pencil which cost a a rubble or two.
Pencils also work great underwater. Pens not so much. I used to get a cheap packet of mechanical pencils for when working on underwater sites. The downside to the mechanical pencils is the springs can corrode quickly in salt water. It has been years, so something might be better these days, but a mechanical pencil and plastic slate worked quite well.
These days, I tend to use the classic Staedtler Mars 780 with 2mm lead when sketching.

I prefer. #2 pencil. I found that my notebooks show a pen through which makes my normally illegible writing that much harder to read. Just generally sharpen a pencil and throw it into the composition notebook and head out to either class, service or meeting.
I’ve really enjoyed reading the comments about this subject...

Faber-Castell 9000 in a 4b. Started using these way back in the day. They keep a sharp point and write like a fine point pen. You can get them at most art stores, just look for the green pencils and be ready to pay about three bucks.

I use them every day at work. Today is an Office Depot #2 ... works great on frosted microscope sludes. 😄

I use pencils every day. I find I write better with them than with a pen; I've no idea why.

I use pencils every day. I find I write better with them than with a pen; I've no idea why. Cause they have an eraser?😂 I like the “flow” from the graphite more than the ink.

I find them strangely satisfying to work with.
