Using Ice when recovering from many injuries or during post op procedures, really speeds up the healing and aids in discomfort. Using ice packs can be messy, and they can be too cold on the skin, and if you put cloth between the pack and your skin can often make it less effective. When I had my shoulder surgeries, my doctor prescribed me an ice therapy unit that recirculates ice water at a constant flow, and a constant temperature through the "veins" in the velco wrap pad. You can buy an array of pads for the ankle, elbow, etc..comes with quick disconnect dripless fittings if you need to get up. I modified a styrofoam box from Omaha Steaks that my neighbor was throwing out, and it helps the ice last a long time. Glad I kept the unit, strained an ankle muscle the other day...(all I have is the shoulder pad, it is big but does the trick) If you are facing a surgery on one of the extremities, it might be good to ask the doctor to write a script, it does not require a prescription, as you can buy the Donjoy unit I have on Amazon, but it is $185.00. I have seen them regularly on offer up, and I imagine they are on Ebay also. If you are supplied with one through your medical coverage, keep it for a "rainy day".`

I have found Active-Wrap to be quite effective for a knee injury. Check out the link. Active-Wrap

I use a similar item for my knee but only in extreme emergencies.

That's quite a set up. When I had my left knee replaced, applications of ice was just the thing for keeping the swelling down. The system that I used was a large bag of frozen peas. The bag conformed to the contour of my knee and could be refrozen for another time. Nothing as fancy as that rig, but it worked out just fine. Cheap, too.

Cold is great for reducing discomfort--I use it all the time. However, it's recently been shown to slow healing from injury and surgery.

That's true...both cold and heat applications are being questioned now and I'm not up on the latest. Apparently, both are still being prescribed and I was advised to apply ice to the swelling around my new hip. I'm interested in watching the developments concerning this new thinking.

Yup, RICE was first aid standard forever. Now? It's something pretty important to explore further. The physiology behind the new thinking makes sense. However, if I sprain an ankle and it's swelling like a [name a fruit], it might be hard to resist ice and NSAIDS! Opioid analgesics seem to allow faster healing from trauma, but those have been vilified. Ha, that kvetching I'll save for the pain fora!

I pulled something in my ankle and for two days, I was hobbling around. Thought about my icewater recirculating yesterday, and used it for about 4 hours, and it cut the pain and stiffness by 80%, woke up this morning and the pain and stiffness is gone by 95%. YMMV.

Pushing my luck. I recently got an order from smokingpipes.com and left it unopened on the kitchen island for Deere to see when she got home from a trip. Then made a chainsaw parts order. So far so good but I just made another small order from Smokingpipes.com we will see if Deere flips out 4 nice cobs and two tins of tobacco and two 4oz bulks

When I had my endoscopic carpal tunnel surgeries last fall, I was expressly told to not apply either cold or heat packs to my wrists. Simply keep elevated above my heart for 72 hours and take over the counter Motrin and Tylenol.
