Inflation/rising prices are an oft visited topic here on the patch and well, everywhere. I ran across a pipe related example that I found interesting. First off, not a criticism, but I’m quite sure that Missouri Meerschaum doesn’t drop the bucks required for such beautiful stationary/invoices anymore. This old one is outstanding! Anyway, check out these prices. They are obviously wholesale, but wow. Rob Roy pipes for $6.75 per GROSS. That’s less than 5 cents per pipe.

Very cool find! The engraving on the invoice looks like an automobile factory from that era.

I wonder if that building accurately represents the size of MM back in its heyday?
The smokestacks billowing smoke, be it factory, train, or pipe I think represents productivity, and upward mobility during the Industrial Revolution.
The same optics nowadays would make some recoil in horror!

I pulled up a photo of the current MM factory, it appears it’s the same location they were in when the invoice was made. It’s certainly possible, if not probable that parts of the factory have been demolished over the years, but I think the engraved picture may be wishfully embellished.

In the past, I had seen photos from the production and storage areas for the cobs, and the inside certainly looks its age.
Amazing history/ longevity!

By chance I ran across a MM 75th Anniversary postcard from 1914, same factory.

The postcard says established 1872
The 1914 picture says 75th anniversary?

The postcard says established 1872 The 1914 picture says 75th anniversary? I didn’t read it that carefully, upon re-reading it, it appears it’s the 75th anniversary of the founding of the town, in 1914.
