A world history lesson...lest we forget. My old Grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take a whipping. I don't carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keep from being killed. I don't carry a gun because I'm evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the World. I don't carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government. I don't carry a gun because I'm angry; I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared. I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon. I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love. I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate. I don't carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me. Police protection is an oxymoron: Free citizens must protect themselves because police do not protect you from crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess. Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a whoopin'! A LITTLE GUN HISTORY... PLEASE DON'T THINK FOR A MOMENT, THAT THIS COULDN'T HAPPEN IN OUR COUNTRY ALSO !!!

I get that and agree for the most part.
For me, I use situational awareness to avoid problems. At least I try. When I operated a business which was largely cash based I carried when traveling to the bank. The hassles associated with self defense use of a firearm have so many ramifications I am reluctant to carry in public. Here, if there is a shooting event, arrest is standard. Since there have been so many unexplained deaths in our county Detention Facility, I have no desire to be incarcerated even overnight. Assuming the event was justified there is still the civil litigation law suit. No one here, and I mean no one, ever accepts responsibility for their family member's offense. Then there is the feud with clan members. Never ending trouble. It just does not seem worth the trouble. Here, carrying a firearm suggests one is looking for that trouble, not avoiding it. Our District Court judges are super liberal ex-Public Defenders who do not support the 2nd Amendment as others do. That is not as it should be but those are the local values we live with.

If you make the choice to carry, it is a good idea to sign up for prepaid legal defense… inexpensive insurance should you find yourself in the gravest extreme. My buddy is a retired police officer 15 years as a homicide detective, 10 years on the fugitive task force and he will be the first to tell you that the police are not your friends, even if it appears justified at the outset. His choice for insurance that he subscribes to: armedcitizensnetwork.org/He has witnessed them in action, and has sat on court cases with people like Massad Ayoob providing expert testimony on behalf of the member. Not a “get out of jail free card”, you are expected to exercise proper judgment and know what is justified and what is not. I find that regardless of whether I am armed or not as John said, situational awareness is key. And…always looking to de-escalate a situation, in no way do I want to be perceived as escalating it. Being armed gives you options when facing the loss of life or limb, and I would be miserable knowing that I did not avail myself of the protected right to defend myself and family members.

I just learned that in the next village a 14 year old boy shot and killed a 13 year old girl with a gun his father gave him to carry. After killing the girl he dragged her body outside. He then resisted arrest by barricading in his house with his father. I know the father. He is a belligerent, hostile, angry man who has been involved in other deaths. He is a county jail officer and should know better. That jail had six inmate deaths this year. He has waved a gun at me over irrigation water. I watched him grow up angry over 25 years here. Under NM law, he has been charged as an accessory to murder. He is from a well connected family. Past crimes committed were kept hidden with the evidence disappearing from the NM State Police Crime Lab. It will be interesting to see if there is any accountability. I think this time his family connections will not prevail. At least, I hope not. Whatever the courts decide, the family of the dead girl will have revenge upon him and his son.

Sounds like an episode straight out of Kentucky, John!😉
People like that are what motivates me to carry.

Sounds like an episode straight out of Kentucky, John!😉 People like that are what motivates me to carry. Kentucky has nothing on the violence of New Mexico. Who would expect a 14 year old boy to be armed? He is well known to have a gun on him always I was told. Cops did nothing to intervene until he killed someone. Believe me, this kid was not "Mattie Ross". Just a pint sized thug like his father.

What a terrible story, John. I’m a 2A supporter, but there are people who should NOT have guns. What an awful legacy this father has given his son.

I agree, some people should be able to judge themselves and realize that they lack the ability to responsibly carry a gun.
My wife has an aunt that is a real piece of work. She once told me : “People should not be allowed to have guns, if I carried one the first thing I would do when they cross me I would want to shoot them”
I told her : “ I agree, someone with that attitude has no business carrying a gun, I however, do not have such anger issues”
She gave me a a big harrumph!
It was a happy day for us when she moved to Holland.

I carry because I don’t want to live with the regret of knowing I might have made a difference but did not have the necessary tool.
