Just acquired a Beretta Onyx for occasional hunting and sporting clays. My son and several friends have been trying to get me to join them for years in clay shooting. I traded a target pistol for the shotgun. Any of you guys shoot clays? In reality, I probably will almost never hunt with it. The picture is not my actual gun, but is a dead ringer for it.

I primarily shoot skeet and clays these days. Mostly older sxs shotguns, but do own a few o/u that I shoot occasionally. I've also done some pheasant hunting with them. I recently picked up a nice little 28 gauge sxs that I am looking forward to breaking some clays with.
I'll be heading to the Vintage Gunners Cup in PA next month. It has always been a good time, with some nice guns on offer.

My sole shotgun is a Remington 870, I am not qualified to issue an opinion, but I will anyway, that looks like a sweet smokepole.

Nice Beretta! My son and I shot skeet twice a week for years--sort of Dad/Son bonding time. He was the state junior champion at 16--many years ago. And the old man who taught the boy how to shoot ain't so bad himself. Just sayin'.... My favorite shotgun for skeet is this Weatherby Orion 20 gauge. Shot my first perfect score with it....

Used to do sporting clays with my dad at the Tucson trap and skeet club. It was fun. Irc I had a Remington 1100 and he had a old fox side by side.

I'd love to try clay shooting some time. That looks like a beauty of a gun though.

Nice shotgun. Sporting clays is one of my favorite things to do, and we have one of the top rated courses in the country here at Elm Fork.
The woods course is our favorite, but you can't see any of the launchers hidden in the trees, so you have no idea where the birds are coming from or where they'll go. Well, except for the 100-ft tower that launches them from the top, and the last one that simulates a rabbit.
On the rabbit station, the clays are smaller and thicker than regular ones, and bounce randomly across the ground. Then, they have freaking hay bales in front of the bouncing clays, so you can only see them half the time, when they're between the bales.
Unfortunately, their prices are getting out of hand - you can't buy 50 birds any more, only 100, and the golf cart went up to $12 dollars a person. With tax, the cart and the price of the shells, a single trip is over $120 dollars for each person. Skeet is better, at $13 bucks for 25 birds, but not nearly as much fun.

I have got to the point where I would rather watch birds, even dove, quail and pheasant, than shoot them. Clays are just fine for me. Hell, I don’t even keep any fish unless they are hooked too bad to release. Might go barbless on my trout fishing. Turning into a gentle old man, I guess.

I find the idea of killing animals less appealing as I age. Life takes on a special quality. I even rescue grasshoppers trapped in my sink and clothes washer. Moths land on me and I look them over and gently shoo them away. I draw the line with house flies. Salt gun has worn out, drat.

Flies and mosquitos get swatted. I am always at war with yellowjackets. Have been since I got swarmed and stung dozens of times as a boy. They get me about once a decade. 😠

Took a friends older cousin shrimping, never had done it, also later we fished for Specks, watched him tie his line so quick in the blink of an eye. Later he said you don't ask many questions, I let people tell me what they want. He said I'm a retired Brain surgeon, did lots of trama for the military, my fee was that they would fly me where I wanted to fish, at the camp I fixed redfish on the half shell , he had never had it like that and really enjoyed it. At the camp he made my wife sit down and cleaned all the dishes. He invited us to Alabama at his Lake house, thst evening he said it's deer season. You want to go, I said yes, late thst afternoon he drove us in the woods where a hunting shed was, inside it was like a living room with a big wooden window opened and a grand view of the woods sitting in easy chairs. At dusk the deer came out and he said pick one out you want to shoot, I told him Stanley they are so pretty can we just watch. He said I knew that was the reason I liked you.

Thinking about a Mossberg 500 "Persuader".
I am finding bear scat, large piles, in the brush area of the upper irrigation system I have to keep clear. My Mossberg Slugster with its 24 inch barrel is a bit large to carry on a small 4 wheel ATV with all the other tools I carry. The 3.5 inch action makes for a large piece. While I also own a Ruger Redhawk, I do not trust my arthritic hands any more with such recoil. My Ruger Deerfield semi-auto .44 magnum carbine is now a "Safe Queen" as it has become too valuable to expose to working conditions. I seldom expect Black Bears to be a problem but startling a sow with a cub in dense brush could be dangerous. While my K98 Polish Mauser pattern rifle would be effective, again, a bit large to carry with everything else.

Probably impossible to beat for the money. I think I would make sure not to have one in the chamber while riding around on the machine, though. Crazy things can happen in a wreck.

Unlikely I would keep a shell in the chamber except when entering the brushy area. Clear it upon emerging. I like rifled slugs at close range.

I’ve set my M500 up with a 20” bbl with rifle sights and a Speedfeed stock.

I’ve set my M500 up with a 20” bbl with rifle sights and a Speedfeed stock. That sounds effective. My Mossberg 835 has a 24 inch slug barrel which is why I was looking at 18.5. I like the rifle sights on it rather that the bead.

I’m not sure what you are asking, Ron…. S&W Model 41 or 52 target pistol traded? Damn, I am slow sometimes, Ron. The 52. Wasn’t shooting it at all. I enjoy my Officer’s Model Special more and it is easier to craft reloads for. It is scary accurate. So was the 52. I have never had a 41, but you never know….

Beautiful shotgun.
I shoot a lot of handgun - and some rifle, but I've never done much shotgun shooting. Wish I had. Only rabbit and pheasant hunting - and none of that for over 20 years.

Anyone own a Mossberg 590S Shockwave? If so how do you like it?
