The other night on the country Squire podcast, JD said we are seeing the last of the Syrian latakia..Mac Baren has one more shipment next year and then that is it. I am betting that since this is the last of the leaf it will all be tinned, just a gut feeling. Iwan Reis has bulk 1 pound bags, Smokingpipes and P&C are out, so if you want some for the cellar, now might be the time. www.iwanries.com/Mac-Baren-HH-Vintage-Syrian-16oz-P11920C2202.cfm

I picked up a baker's dozen tins recently to supplement my stash.

I think I have about 11 lbs so I'm good! No wonder Macbaren is running out of the stuff! Must be a go-to smoke? I don't smoke much English, but when I do Nightcap and vintage Syrian really fit the bill... I guess those that like Frog Morton's "Across the pond should cellar up also, JD said that McClelland said they will no longer be able to produce it without Syrian Latakia....I admire them for not just keeing the product and susbstituting components, there are too many blends that from wat I have read are a sadow of what they formerly were by doing that.I ordered 2 pounds, I have a pound on hand in half pint jars already...thinking about leaving these individual pounds in original sealed bags and heat sealing them in mylar...any thoughts?

I have no idea how best to store a Latakia. A lot of people say that the flavor fades over time so I put in an O2 absorber and then seal in a mason jar or mylar bag. I'm hoping that with no O2 the inert environment will stop aging/fading.

I smoke aged tobacco every day that tastes great but I still can't age out that nasty chemical taste of VS that I've had in jars for years. Yuk!

There must be something about aged English blends, Steve Fallon aka Pipestud says that they bring in the highest prices...anyone pricing an old tin of Balkan Sobrani finds real quick that it comes at a premium price.

I don´t know, with all the mysticism, marketing and half-truths in the tobacco industry I am not sure if I was smoking Syrian Latakia or Cyprus Latakia all the time. Frankly I doubt that I would know the difference and as long as there is any Latakia I am fine. Regarding long term storage I have to say that I have smoked Latakia mixtures that were still under vacuum from the eighties. The taste was significantly different and more mellow than I was supposed to be. So I will not stock up on it.

...depending on the grade I think it is very difficult to tell the difference between the two...

My palate is pretty unrefined, but the Syrian that I smoke in the blend that I have seems like it isn't quite as heavy as the blends that has Cyprian Latakia in it...I am guessing that the regional woods used in the curing process may play a role.

Or could it be that the Sryrian is already faded due to it being 20-30 years old? To me, it seems that Syrian is sweeter but then again its hard to tell with the sauces that are added.

Could be.... our first Arizona pipe club meeting was a Latakia MOAB event... ever since then, I tend to like a softer lat smoke.
