What was the first tin of tobacco you purchased? Thoughts on said tobacco?
My first tin was Mac Baren's plum cake. The larger tin was enticing and the tin art work was understated yet cool and elegant.
The baccy was bitey and not my preference...still it was the beginning of my pipe journey and quite exciting.

The first tobacco I bought was a store blend (most likely a Lane's blend) from the shop I bought my first pipe from. The first tin of tobacco . . . hmm, I'm not sure.

I think my first tobacco was a bulk blend...and most likely, as you say, I think it was a lane product as well. My first pipe was a Boswell second, a partially bent brandy.

Mine was an Amadeus sandblast. The shape was a knockoff of the Savinelli 316.

My first tobacco was a pouch of Amphora bought in the same store as my first pipe located on Madison and 42nd in NYC back in '70.

The first pipe tobaccos I bought were Prince Albert Cherry Vanilla in a pouch, then some McClelland and Peter Stokkebye bulks, and the first two tins I bought the same day were Balkan Sasieni and Dunhill MyMixture 965.

RLP-6 sold under a local name. Bought it with my grandfather, it was his only blend he smoked.

Murray's Era Dunhill nightcap and they thru in a couple ounces of bulk I belive it was lane bca when I purchased the pipe as every pipe purchase came with 2 free Oz of bulk and I liked the way the bca jar smelled.

According to yellowed notes, in 1962 from long gone B&M, 2oz tin of original 965, about $2 then. Already had a few briars & cobs.
Ed-makes me kinda old-ish that!

My first blends were bulk aromatics that were displayed in those bid glass jars. You could smell them to find something you might like. P)us, they were much cheaper. As I drifted away from aromatics, I bought English blends that same way. Tinned tobacco was more of a treat for me. The first tins I bought were Dunhill (EMP, Nightcap, 965), Rattray's (don't remember which),and Elephant & Castle (Isle of Skye, The Stout).

Having been in and out pipe smoking through the years, it is a bit difficult to say. In my initial encounters (The first period of my pipe smoking journey), I smoked B&M blends. My tin and online bulk purchases began around the second great pipe age. The first tins among firsts were probably from McClelland's Grand Oriental series. They pulled me in by reputation and sale (5.00 dollars a tin). I bought most of the entire series with some duplicates. Popping and smoking the Smyrna blend first, I knew I hit a home run, one of many.
Epilogue: The third and last period, carries us to today. Tin and bulk selections have grown as the cellar began to form. Though my consumption is restricted by my current medical plan, I marshal on in that great British tradition 🇬🇧🥸🇬🇧🍻🇬🇧🧐🇬🇧🍺🇬🇧🤓

Orlik Golden Sliced. I still like it and have a big jar of 2016 flakes to draw from.

My first bought tobacco was a pouch of St. Bruno ready rubbed... I didn't care for it. I haven't tried it since, but I do love St. Bruno flake, so i think my tastes have changed through the years.

My first pipe tobacco purchase was a pouch of Agrossy Black, around this time of year back in 79...my first TIN was C & D Cross-Eyed Cricket; I got that at my first pipe show, out in a local mall in front of The Tinder Box.

I know Pete{ Darktater} worked his way through a tin not too long ago. I remember it as an Okay smoke, but back then I still had way too much to try to stock up on anything that wasn't really special, plus the idea of cellaring was far in the future for me. I only had maybe two years or three as a piper under my belt, and was far too busy buying pipes.

My first tobaccos were in pouches--I'm going to guess Flying Dutchman may have been my first and Borkum Riff the second kind I tried. What did I know of pipe tobaccos? Nothing, it was all about how the pouch looked.
Not sure when or what my first tin was. Maybe Troost--anyway that was one of the first tobaccos I bought in tins. Honestly, for quite a while during graduate school and after, I was poor enough that buying a tin was often kind of a stretch.
