As luck would have it I was back in Boston for business this week. As even more luck would have it my hotel, Four Seasons was was just across the street from Peretti's... Of course I went there (twice). ;-)

While living in CT many years ago, I used to go to Boston for business. It must have been at Peretti's that I bought a box of my favorite cigars.

Have to say the exterior of the shop looks pretty down at the heel. Doesn't exactly scream "Come have a look around!"
For those who haven't seen it, there's an extended video tour and interview with the owner of Peretti's on YT. It's well worth watching.

And the display windows don't look like they've been touched, cleaned, or dusted since the '70s.

Everytime I went to Boston a visit was in order. I really like that store.
I believe my last visit was 10 years ago....

Many years ago, I had a friend who went to grad school at Boston University. He was the guy who got me interested in pipe smoking. I visited several times. Never made it to Peretti, but I did go to Ehrlich's. Bought a pipe there.

I love the old tobacconists when they maintain the old look and feel, there are only a handful of them holding on that have been in the US since the 1800s. Riegel's here is very similar. I think I'll go down there for a visit sometime in the next few days.

My traveling days are probably over for good, but if I were ever in Boston again, I would certainly seek out this place.
We still have Iwan Ries in Chicago, the last of the very old-school tobacconists that I remember around here. Talk about unprepossessing exteriors, Iwan Ries doesn't even have a storefront--just a door in a building that has seen better days, from which you have to go up a floor. Ah, but the smell that greets you as you mount those slightly seedy stairs. (There is also an ancient elevator that might--might--accommodate two adults if neither is too hefty.) Being aged and a little shabby myself, I appreciate stores that are the same.
