Howdy fellas, I've seen some guys write that they quit the pipe for a few years or more only to come back later and resume smoking.
I'm wondering the reason for this? Is it financial? Pressure from a loved one? Health reasons? Loss of interest?
Thanks for sharing, in advance, I appreciate any input.

I initially started smoking the pipe before having kids, once I had kids I did not want them smoking, having grown up where both of my parents were heavy cigarette smokers.
Not being addicted to the pipe, it was easy to refrain from smoking for several years.
I took up pipe smoking after my kids were adults, and my oldest upon being present when smoking a cigar, told me that I should pick up the pipe as it was more pleasant than cigar smoke.
She has a great memory, because she was very young… a toddler.

For me it was simply other hobbies and interests that come and go likely to cycle back in for different periods of time. Currently, I am in the third pipe age, not to be confused with ice age. Even so, since my mom's passing, I smoke less frequently. No worries, the threat of a new pipe extinction event is not going to happen, at least not any time soon.

I quit for many years after a fire consumed all my smokables. No particular reason, other than that I was just too heartsick after the fire to get back into it, and had too many other expenses.

I quit all tobacco in 1985. I was shooting competitively and heard that quitting smoking would help my scores. It did, marginally, but I can’t really say that was the cause as there were other factors. Also, ironically, our top shooter smoked two packs per match and guzzled hi-octane Cokes by the six-pack. Anyway, I was off tabac until I rediscovered pipes a couple of years ago.

Was that a total loss on all of your belongings? Pretty close. Mostly due to smoke damage. My pipes, etc., were stored in a cabinet against the wall separating me from the other side of the duplex, which is where the fire started. That all went up.

Smoke damage pretty much renders stuff to the trash heap. We had a fire in our basement, all my clothes got smoked pretty good...buying new clothes interfered with my dad's beer money so a salvaging of clothes was instituted. I went to school smelling like smoke, by the end of the day the weakened threads released both long sleeves, I looked like a Jethro Beaudean in training.

You had to put up with some stuff as a kid that nobody should have to put up with. At least your sleeves were all that fell off.

My folks went on a 25th anniversary trip about my 8th grade year in the summer no body was home I was out at my Dad's other place with my clothes and guns. Mom left the iron on and caught the house on fire. Smoke damage is no joke. I really was not too concerned about the stuff in my room I had my guns with me.
