While I was at the Int'l Slow Smoking Event in Romania, there was a table displaying tobaccos from a Turkish company Gladora. They had gorgeous blocks, up to several kilos, of Latakia Flake. Taking a chance on busting customs rules, I bought a 500 gtam chunk. At the Smoketoberfest with the Chesapeake PC, I used an ulu to flake off some samples for fellow Latakia addicts. They pretty much agreed that this stuff was better than Gaslight, Old Ironside, Holly's Discovery, Pirate Kake, Bow Legged Bear, Ten Russians, Penzance, maybe even Krumble Kake. It is not a full blown LatBomb, and the floral and sweet notes are captivating. After listening to Jeremy Reeves new YouTube about the new issue of From Beyond, I'm thinking he may be talking to the same people. Curiously, the SmokingPipes boiler plate does not refer to a Turkish Latakia.
In any case, the way the FDA Deeming regs are set up, as long as the composition of a blend that was on the market in 1997 is the same, what we might perceive as a new product is viewed as same ol'/same ol' by the Feds, rather than a new inroduction requiring testing and approval. Hence if company X were to take a grandfathered BalkanY or whatever, and sub out the Cyprian or Syrian Latakia with the new Turkish Lat, they could promote it as "new" and still be ok with the Feds. A simple substitution would taste different and be good enough to most tastes to be worthy of a marketing promotion.

Definitely worth keeping an eye on it. This is the first that I heard about it, so thanks for taking the time to post.
We’re you at LVIPS?

Hello, stranger. That's interesting. First I've heard about a Turkish Latakia.
Also, I just saw Ed's head pop up like an alerted meercat.

Yo trai
I was fixing to do Vegas and in fact reserved a room, which I forgot about. Dunno yet if I forfeited a night's cost. But since I had just arrived home from Romania Tuesday(transit time near 24 hrs counting driving), turning right around and going West in one or two days was more excitement than I could handle.

I saw a guy that had a resemblance, I was going to approach him at LVIPS, but each time I saw him he was engrossed in conversation… glad I didn’t ask him if he was Les!
That…. Sounds like a long day!

Bet it was Bruce T. I haven’t seen him in a few years. Since I saw him last pre covid he moved from Rockford IL to Phx. He is an incredible person who has an incredible cellar and pipe collection. Guessing he was in the top 2 or three tobacco collectors at the show.
