Was there some event or someone that started you down your pipe path?
My mother smoked cigarettes and my dad smoked the pipe for a couple of months and then gave it up. I always liked the smell of tobacco. I tried all baccy products and finally settled on the pipe.

I think there was, though I wasn't really conscious of it at the time. When I was a small kid, my dad was a jackleg preacher at a couple of small, country churches. At one of them, there was an elderly gentleman who used to sit on the wooden steps outside and tell me stories while he smoked his pipe. (There was also an old hand pump full of yellow jackets, but I haven't taken up collecting hand pumps or yellow jackets, yet.)

My uncle smoked a pipe but what really started it was I saw it was a lot cheaper then the occasional cigars I would pick up from the tinderbox in college as the pipe was reusable unlike the cigars.

WW2 jeep mechanic and veteran. I still have a hand knit hat his Mrs made me. Puts a smile on my face.

Not really an individual per se, more of a collection of individuals that influenced my views of pipe smokers that appealed to me. My maternal grandpa smoked a pipe, a pretty quiet man that lived through a lot of hard times. On my dad's side my uncle Earl smoked a pipe, also a quiet man that lived to fish whenever possible. Whether it be Fred MacMurray, Bing Crosby, Einstein, or Tolkein...they all came across as cool and collected individuals. Really was what sparked my entry into pipe smoking, was walking into a Tinderbox in Wichita as a teen, opening all the bulk jars and taking a whiff! Man that really appealed to me...the seed was sown, and a salesman told me about how the Meerschaum would color as a person smoked the pipe. But lacking discretionary spending money, I did not pursue the pipe. In my early 20's I found myself in a Tinderbox again in Mountain View Ca., but now I had money in my pocket! I bought a small turban headed Meerschaum and a bag of North Sea (Stokkebye Nougat) and it was off to the races. That was my constant companion on My SF> LA runs hauling meat for the next several years, the Meer colored nicely, but was lost somewhere along the way. I know that I am generalizing, but it has been my observation that people that exclusively smoke a cigar are more prone to be type "A" personalities. People that smoke exclusively pipes are more reserved in their demeanor.

My Uncle Frank was my influence. Here's a story I've told about him in the past:
Uncle Frank was not one for doctors or check-ups ... just hard work and living right.
However, when he turned 80, my Aunt Jacobine put her foot down and demanded he at least get a check-up.
So, reluctantly, he made an appointment for the next day.
After the usual poking, prodding, blood tests, etc., he was given a clean bill of health.
The doctor actually thought Frank was in his late 60's until he asked.
Before leaving, Uncle Frank said, "Well go ahead and get it over with"!
The doctor, quite confused, said, "Get what over with?"?
"You're going to tell me to quit smoking", Frank replied.
"I didn't even know you smoked!", exclaimed the doctor.
"Yep, been smoking a pipe for 73 years ... started at the age of seven".
"Well, my advice to you is to NOT quit smoking ... that would be the worst thing you could do at this point"!
Uncle Frank went home quite pleased with himself and continued smoking another eight years.

I had an uncle Morris that smoked a pipe when I was a wee lad. Morris was from dear ole Ireland. His brogue was deep and sweet. He was a gentle man and very quiet. His preferred tobacco that I could tell was Half and Half. Back then the aroma was better than it is today. I was mesmerized by the way he packed, lit and smoked his pipe. His technique needed very few relights and he got good time past when he smoke it. I never understood a word he said, but, I learned to love a pipe like he did. Will be having my pipe anniversary of 53 years in January.
