Other than McClelland, what was one of the first tobaccos to go missing in your life, and leave you wanting? Oldtimers might remember the House of Winsor tobaccos, or even the fine old tins of the sixties and before, but for me... A black pouch with a bold clipper-ship, on blue waves, and above that in large red lettering, Skandinavik, and I think it may have sed full aromatic, or just aromatic. Back in late 79 or early 80 I picked up a pouch at the local drugstore, and it was like a new ,old friend from the first puff; I couldn.t put it down. It was a light brown mixture, with the flavor and aroma of fresh baked sweets, but very mild and welcoming...I'd only smoked heavy black aros up to that point, and not many of them...After a few days my supply grew thin, and I ran across the street to the drugstore, and found only an empty slot. GONE! For weeks I popped in in out of that store to look for it, and even ask them to reorder...no luck. Years later, when the internet came along, I sent an e-mail about it to the company, and learned it was discontinued...a fore-shadowing of things to come.

Edgeworth high grade slices. Picked up a tin at a gun auction with a bunch of cigar cutters really cheap… that was great tobacco, and I knew it was never to be again.

Well, you ruled out the only worth mentioning. I knew if I included McClelland the list would be never ending...I'm looking for some stories of Blue Boar, or Player's Navy Cut, and such. The McClelland wounds are still to fresh

Motzek Strang.
There are some blends today that they changed the recipe from years gone by… Jiminks will tell you all about Bell’s Three Nuns.
There are a few others that old timers can recall.

Raven's Wing, Aleister, and Mephisto in the early 2000s. I was already putting up tobacco for future use but those blends going away is what started my cellaring.

It's not from long ago, but the old Carter Hall. I have an open pouch right now, a gift from one of the wife's girl friends, who remembered seeing the label at my house.

Not a blend but a varietal… Syrian Latakia. 😢 Yes indeed… the Syrian is so much better than the Cyprian. I wonder if the proper research was applied if it could be recreated domestically? The USA has so many different growing zones, and with American ingenuity, I think that it could be closely matched if there was a will and market for it.

Certainly the right climate and soil conditions, I would think.

C&D's small batch Palmetto Balkan in 2022 used Cyprian Latakia treated in a special way to bring out Syrian-like qualities. Note that the claim is "Syrian-like”. In that I believe they succeeded. The Latakia has some of the smokey wine characteristics of Syrian Latakia. When I praised it to Jeremy Reeves, I couldn’t get him to say whether it was a processing method that C&D had developed or if it was something they had bought. I highly encouraged him to use it more often.
