Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake in a Rattray's pipe. Coffee brewing.... This is an excellent tobacco and one of my favorites with a deep, rich flavor. I would just like to see it in stock more often.

Good Morning Again! It's 35°, still cloudy, and damp. I'm finishing up a bowl of Straight Grain Flake in the Don Carlos and next will be a bowl of Limerick Flake. Time to sip more coffee and check the headline news.

Mastro de Paja With KBV Ravens Eyes. Completely forgot I had purchased this several years ago. The date on the package is February 2020. It is still good and fresh in that sealed Mylar envelope. We’ll see what I think of it

I’m smoking Mac Baren HH Pure Virginia in a St. Claude cutty. I meant to ask this earlier. Does anyone know the origins of the cutty shape? What was the forward cant designed to do? It's not for convenience of lighting or tamping, that's for sure.

I’m smoking Mac Baren HH Pure Virginia in a St. Claude cutty. I meant to ask this earlier. Does anyone know the origins of the cutty shape? What was the forward cant designed to do? It's not for convenience of lighting or tamping, that's for sure. I have a book on early clay pipes (not handy at the moment or I would post a pic or two) It shows the gradual modification of the chillum, a common pipe style used by American Indians, eventually ending up as a cutty. Originally just a tapered tube, then a bowl being formed. The forward cant of the bowl was a practical thing, in that they formed the pipe around a wire and drew it out before drying to create the vent. Vertical and shaped bowls required extra steps in manufacturing an item that was very cheap and disposable. Initially what was done for practical manufacturing became a style. The book also suggests a more accurate I believe reason on the spur than the explanation usually given, which is that it’s there to strengthen the bend in the shape. I never thought that was correct when I heard it and simply smoking a clay quickly shows what it’s there for- as a stop for your fingers from sliding to the bowl when smoking. Again, later retained as a style on pipes that you could handle the bowl of when smoking.
