Hey, I've been to Frankenmuth! On a choir tour in h.s., we stopped there for a couple hours. All I remember, foodwise, is there was lots and lots of fudge. For food there is the Cheese Haus, Willi’s Sausages, and Kern’s Sausages. Bavarian Inn and Zehnder’s restaurants are famous for their family style chicken dinners. Then there is Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas decorations megastore. I remember the Christmas place, yeah. We may not have been there at meal time. I think it was just an opportunity for everybody to get off the dang school bus and walk around for a while.

Menards delivered my new grill this morning. Breaking it in this evening with brats from Kern's Sausages in Frankenmuth, MI. Frankenmuth is a small town founded by German immigrants which has a Bavarian theme to attract tourists. It is located about 15 to 20 minutes from where I grew up. Kern's was one of two family owned meat markets of my youth. The other one was in Bay City and owned by a Polish family. kernssausage.com/The new grill is nothing special. Just a basic 3 burner CharBroil propane grill. I used to go in for buying big fancy grills until I realized how much I was spending to replace worn out rusted parts. I had own with porcelain coated grates. Three of them and they cost $75 each to replace 10 years ago. Cheaper just to get a basic grill that does the job. Hey, I've been to Frankenmuth! On a choir tour in h.s., we stopped there for a couple hours. All I remember, foodwise, is there was lots and lots of fudge. All the German and Czech towns in Texas are associated with fudge. Part of the tourist aspect. Branson Missouri is also full of fudge shops. None seem to be as widely notorious as Fredicksberg Fudge. But every tourist place in the United States has a fudge shop. Nothing European about it. It's strictly an American invention. The very best fudge is actually made by a forum member in Florida. www.whitakerschocolates.com/blog/when-was-fudge-invented-the-history-of-fudge/

Great sausages, cheese and beer in your neck of the woods! Sage advice on a gas grill, even though I have never had one I know others that had to buy the proprietary parts, and after they are used for some years...you are right, time to move on. daveinlax got a smoking deal on an estate sale in southern Arizona that had barely been used, so there are deals to be had on the secondhand market. The cabins that our family reunion is going to be at in Woodland Park Colorado, (Colorado Springs), only has a crappy park style charcoal grill that will be like tending a cauldron, and i would not want to grill an emaciated cat on. On Offerup in the springs, a guy has a pretty decent Weber 22 inch kettle for $40.00, I am going to see if he will hold it if I pay upfront, and i will donate it to the Cabin when we leave. I will have to wait until I get there to find the emaciated cats.

Fried chicken and potato salad. That is hard to beat. Agreed. Best Foods/ Hellman's has a recipe for potato salad that I have made for years, and it is simply awesome. Reser's will work when being lazy, but time on the shelf (past two days) is no friend to potato salad.

I have had too many charcoal grills. They rust away in a year in the Houston humidity. There are 4 big green eggs around here that people are trying to get rid of for $200-500. If I had a place to put it that's what I would get. If I ever buy any other grill it will have to be all stainless. My barbecue skills don't come close to any of the professionals. I am getting a Blackstone griddle as soon as I can get the back porch finished. Our neighborhood growing up was Czech, Polish, German and Hispanic. Our wasp ancestry was the minority. My first 2 girlfriends were Czech.

We ran into each other at Pioneer City in Wimberley Texas. I was with my Explorer post and she was with her Senior Girl Scout troop. We were trying to exchange phone numbers when I was physically dragged away. She was going to be the love of my life, but I could never find her again. Before the internet you know. I guess it wasn't meant to be. 💔

We had some great family breakfasts there when I was a teenager. I also remember going on a tour of the Carling Brewery when I was a teen. Who remembers Carling Black Label Beer? There’s now a shopping center of boutique shops where Carling used to stand. Frankenmuth Brewery is a relative newcomer to a town with a long history of beer brewing: www.frankenmuth.org/blog/history-of-beer/

Leftover extra crispy KFC and macaroni salad, Hawaiian dinner rolls. I sure wish KFC was not 90 miles round trip or 125 in the other direction!!!! SO, I will likely fry up two frozen chicken thighs if they defrost in time. Large thighs. Must have been a rooster.

Sometimes I get a taste for KFC but every time we drive buy one, (in another town 50 miles away), either we just ate or we're in a hurry to the next appointment.

Nearest Popeyes is 30 miles south and we are usually north or west. Besides, the Atlanta Chicken Express is almost as good. There is a place in Dangerfield, 25 miles away, that is supposed to be the best fried chicken anywhere. It's a little bit expensive, but what isn't? The gas station in town has great chicken, but they are out most of the time. Tiger Den Crispy Chicken (903) 645-2536 g.co/kgs/fN4b3Xy

I prefer Popeye's to KFC. We do not have them in this dimension.
Made my own Southern Fried Chicken thighs with Parish rice and peas with home made gravy. All good.

I made some potato leek soup today for the first time and it was pretty good. Garlic bread on the side. that is a good soup to make. Good cold as well as hot. Just saying since you are rolling into the "warmer" months. For cold, add more milk. Kind of a leek and potato milk shake. Vichyssoise is pretty good.

Yeah, the only difference is that for Vichyssoise, I would chill the soup overnight, let it come to almost room temperature and then add the cream. Next time.

Got my bonus from work. Took some friends to the Atlantis Steakhouse for dinner. Spent my bonus. It's a treat to me twice a year. I like to remember the times spent there with my wife and mom.
