I picked up a neglected copy of 12/2023 pipe collector magazine and read John Lawitzke's contribution of his friend that passed away in Late November. It was a fine piece written, celebrating the life of a guy that comes across as quite jovial in character, and colorful in his attire at the pipe shows.. Never competed in a slow smoke contest, showed up at the 67th annual IASPC world Pipe smoking Contest and nailed it...world champ. I would scan and post the article, but I did not want to post it without permission from the publisher. 59 years old...way too soon, and a reminder of our sometimes fragile existence.
Well done, John...sorry for your loss of such a dear friend. www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/john-beeler-obituary?id=53658620

Nice to be remembered, and thought of so well.; About the best we can ask for on the way out.

Thanks, Charlie! Somehow, I had missed seeing this thread sooner. John was a great guy to know. His passing came fast and was an unwelcome surprise. I had seen him in person in August at the Columbus Show and he seemed fine. In October, I was shocked to hear from a mutual friend that John was in hospice care for pancreatic cancer. A week later, he was gone. 😢
Along with some other fellow pipe club members who were there, we held a memorial smoke outside the funeral home before and after the service. Our club (Arrowhead Pipe Club based at Paul's Pipe Shop) has a club tradition of holding memorial smokes at member's funerals which seem to happen too often.
Just a couple years ago, we lost Ed Launstein. Ed and John used to always carpool and share a room at the Chicago and Columbus Shows. I like to think that they are both now sitting around the Great Pipe Shop in the Sky enjoying a bowl together.
John's passing hit me a bit hard as not only was it a surprise, but with him dying from pancreatic cancer at 59, my Mom had died from pancreatic cancer at 58.

Yeah, that is a nasty diagnosis, it often does it's dirty work really quickly.
+1 on losing your buddy, he would have been a great guy to know based on your thoughts.
