Occasionally, I head out of town and fail a pre-trip inspection...no pipe cleaners? That pretty much nixes the idea of smoking a pipe, and I hope that I packed a cigar.
Pick up a pipe and take a draw.... and the previous stuff liquefies....hot damn, yuck...this pipe needs cleaning!
Hard to imagine being a smoker without this dynamic duo to repel the forces of Nic-evil.
Those that went before me, were hearty souls indeed!

In an emergency, fill the whole thing with whiskey or stronger and let it set for 5 minutes and pour it out. Let it dry for 45 minutes, or 20 minutes in AZ. You should probably get 2 or 3 smokes between cleanings.

Everclear not allowed in NY. I use 160proof DevilsSprings vodka. At least better than what used yrs ago, rubbing alcohol (or whatever they call it).

You're supposed to clean your pipes?

I'll confess that I've been out of pipe cleaners for months now. 😅

I try to clean my pipes after every bowl. Overkill? Maybe. I go thru pipe cleaners and Q-tips like candy.

Darin and Kevin need to be sent to pipe smoker re-education camps… a couple heretics!😂

This thread reminded me I need to order more pipe cleaners when I get paid later on in the week.

I’m always running a pipe cleaner through my pipe as I smoke, and after. But I’m truly a slacker when it comes to keeping my stems clear of oxidation and polishing in general. I love a clear dry airway. But otherwise just tend to let nature take its course.

I digress… I have plenty of pipe cleaners, but ran out of Everclear, and have gotten lazy on pipe cleaning.
Neglecting my pipes, I realized that the gunk laid dormant and sparking a bowl liquiefied the past gunk. Cleaning the pipe with my favorite solvent really delivers a great smoke.

A clean pipe is a good tasting pipe.

Darin and Kevin need to be sent to pipe smoker re-education camps… a couple heretics!😂 Darin smokes mostly cigars. I can't find an excuse for Kevin.😉 As for myself, the reason I haven't smoked a pipe in the past few days is that my smoking table has too many pipes waiting to be cleaned and I just don't feel like it. I think I'll grab a random pipe from the cabinet and go out on to the porch.

The nice thing is no matter how lackadaisical we can be on cleaning, a good cleaning with an alcohol based solvent and we are back in the game....no worse for the wear.

I imagine there's such a thing as over cleaning. If I run a fluffy cleaner through right after I finish I can get most of the nasties and not need an alcohol scrub for several bowls. But I have been sloughing off.

I'll confess to not being much of a cleaner. If a pipe starts to taste off, or smells off after I've smoked and rested it, it gets cleaned. Otherwise, I don't really sweat it.

I always run a pipe cleaner through my pipes after smoking, but that's been about it.

I have a large enough collection that I can get away without cleaning my pipes for a few days...all right a few weeks. Right now, I'm all out of pipe cleaners. Among my pipes are two clays. I burn them out about every six months, or so. But the others, I just rest for a day or two to dry out.

I can smoke a different pipe every day for 7 months, but the problem I have is that I run out of places to stack the dirty ones. 😁
