I have a 40 ft container in back and alongside of my barn for the overflow. Told wife don’t go in there until I put smoke bombs to drive critters out. Well she went in Buddy followed her, a water moccasin bit him and he died, guess I’m lucky it wasn’t the wife, can’t fuss as she is really sad about it, I’m sad too!

I am so sorry to hear that. I think we all enjoyed the stories and the pictures when he was young. He brought smiles to the faces of those that didn’t even actually know him.

Terrible news, Brad. So sorry you lost the little guy. Best wishes to you and the missus.
Water moccasins are aggressive as hell.

For Hurricane Audrey I was 14, rescuing people off of roofs in Dads Shrimp boat he would get alongside I would beat them off so people could jump in boat, they were like crazy and a mass of them. Had bad dreams for a long time!

I used to see ‘em at dusk crawling up onto the cypress knees on Cross Lake outside of Shreveport. Many, many bad dreams! I hate them above all snakes. I would have a party if they went extinct.

They are bad juju. While fishing, I've had them swim directly up to the boat to let us know we didn't belong. Had to knock 'em away with an oar.

Sorry for your loss oldcajun. It’s hard to lose a pet that’s been in the family for a long time.

I know my wife would lose her mind losing a pet regardless of how long she had it. Even a pup would be the same to her as one we had for ten years or more.

I went canoeing with a friend one time in a bayou in the outer part of Kenner, LA. We had to stay away from the overhanging branches in order to avoid just that: a snake dropping into the boat.

Motoring a john-boat along the Ouachita as kid I bumped into a mass of snag and logs. A c’mouth was in them. I shot him and it felt so good.

Out of curiosity, I read the Wikipedia entry on them. Interestingly enough, it says they aren't all that aggressive. It says the common watersnake, which is very aggressive (but not poisonous), is often mistaken for a cottonmouth. They do look very similar.

On the whole, I prefer our languorous Prairie Rattlers. Got to meet a Cobra once. Held him. Nice fellow, about eight feet overall with a good attitude. Been handled all his life and was used to people. Never puffed his hood.

Sucks to lose any dog to a snake when shells are cheap. How big was the snake we often see six footers running the drainage ditches around Houston.

I’ve snake-broken a number of dogs. It’s not rocket science. Snakes are smelly. When I was younger and had an operating sniffer I could pick out one at a decent distance. For a dog they must be overpowering. I use a shock collar. It’s best if we can just come upon one, but that’s rarely possible. Even a little garter snake will work. If the dog gets close I let him have a jolt. As he pulls back I praise him. A dead rattler is perfect for this, if you have one available. Most dogs are leery of snakes, but they are also fascinated. It’s a quick process to teach them that getting close is a bad thing to do. It only takes one or two jolts for them to get the idea. This will stay with them forever. It’s well worth the time and effort it takes. But the dog has to be old enough to be teachable. I would usually start the process at four or five months. The collar may sound cruel to some folks, but it’s a lot less cruel than a bad snake bite.

I can't speak about the ones I haven't met, but the ones I have encountered were extremely aggressive. I've also seen a lot of water snakes around the house here, and they are always running, err, crawling away.
