Do you have a fancy, favorite tamper...or do you stick with a tried and true design? I like the good 'ol standby, plain-Jane, aluminum nails or maybe a Czech Pipe tool. If I had a really nice/pricey tamp, I know I'd lose the darn thing.
I've seen some really incredible, artistic tamps out there too.

I've got 2 faves. Neither is very fancy. One is a tamper Plainsman made from .308 and .357 shells pressed together. The other is a basic Savinelli one with the pick that screws into the body.

I use my right index finger. Works pretty well as long as I'm fast, otherwise I can get burned.

FWIW, I own a couple fancier tampers, but I use a Czech tool most of the time.

I have a couple fancy tampers and several Czech-style tools. I just use sticks that I've whittled. Tamper at one end, pick at the other.

I have a bunch of cartridge-case double-ended tampers that I have put together. For a pick I much prefer the square, chisel shaped pick on the pipe-shaped tool to the round one on the Czech tool. Much more useful and better at cleaning out a bowl.

Just a plain Czech tool for me, works just fine.

For years I’ve almost exclusively used the Tsuge on the right and would never be without it, but lately I’ve occasionally been using the stick that don gave me. It works really well.

I have several favorites that get lost and reappear. I have a sterling silver naked lady that I'm fond of, plus a couple of Snake tampers that I had him make custom for me. And othere.

Started in 1962, bought two wooden dowlings, 1/2 & 3/4", 4" long each. Only use wider one for my 3 magnums, have served me well every since then. There was a fella use to make beautiful ones, peuter mostly, dunno if he's still around

I’ve been collecting tampers for almost as long as I’ve collected pipes. I’ve cooled off accumulating them but I’m still adding to my large Castello, Dunhill and Ming-Kahuna (RIP 3/4/2023) collections. This is my Castello collection as of a few years ago.

I have a tamper made by my departed friend and member of the az pipe club John R. He took a piece of dowel and modified it to look like a honey dipper then glued a 9mm shell casing to it. It's one of my favorites tho I most often reach when out and about for a regular pipe tool as I'm afraid to lose the one he made for me.

Speaking of John, he crafted me a few things including a couple of turned wood coloring bowls that were successful. This large “bullet”pen/tamper was the last thing he made for me. It’s the perfect size for the large pipes I smoke daily and is at hand all year.

I use a Czech Pipe tool, or the tamper in the bottom of my IM Corona old boy when I have it loaded with fuel.

It is beneficial to remove your head before inserting the thumb or so I have been told.

At the moment, all I have are those multi tool tampers commonly known in my area as Czech tools.
