C&D Palmetto Balkan is being released again on March 26. I missed this the last time it was released. Is it worth buying a few tins for the cellar?

C&D Palmetto Balkan is being released again on March 26. I missed this the last time it was released. Is it worth buying a few tins for the cellar? The last batch came out in about May of 2022, and generally got favorable reviews. The description from that batch…. “ Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch blends are handcrafted in small quantities by our expert blenders right here in South Carolina. Our unique interpretation of the Oriental-forward blends of yesteryear. Palmetto Balkan features mature 2018 Izmir and 2019 Basma varietals; top-tier 2017 and 2019 Carolina Red Virginias; and Cypriot Latakia enhanced by a special, proprietary process. Rich with notes of woodsmoke, berries, oak, and baking spices, it showcases a velvety, wine-like character reminiscent of long-lost Syrian leaf.” Pretty sure this one will be 8oz. again. If I remember correctly, since this was a new blend, selling at 8oz. made it easier to comply with the FDA regs.

It’s in the same neighborhood as Presbyterian, if that helps. The last person I told that comparison to ended up never having tried Presbyterian… If you like the smokey wine notes of Syrian Latakia, this specially processed Cyprian Latakia succeeds in having Syrian-like qualities. I bought six 8oz cans last time and plan to pick up two more.

I might grab a tin anyway to give it a try since it seems well liked.

I understand this edition of Palmetto has a different Latakia. I gather Jeremy has been using the Turkish Latakia in several new and revised blends, such as From Beyond. The Turkish Lat I tried in Romania is from Gladora, which has a couple of superb plugs under the brand Pesse Canoe. This new Lat is intermediate between the extinct Syrian and the common Cyprian, and is delightfully smooth and complex, manifesting the floral, herbal notes of the former and the peaty, campfire scents of the latter.

And a great endorsement from a world class pipe smoker! Looking forward to my two tins.
Thanks, Les!

I got tin#’s 16 and 18 of 2,800 tinned.
Pretty sure that a Willy Wonka type golden ticket should accompany my order.
