I prefer the old style cardboard matches that come 20 to a matchbook. These used to be the standard for cigarette smokers. When the cigar boom came, wooden stick matches got more common. Now, when I was shopping ShopRite for a box of matchbooks, all they have now are wooden sticks. The old matchbooks used to come out of the old coin operated cigarette machines, which I haven't seen now for a decade or more.

Have you checked grocery stores? When I picked up hazmat at grocery stores, (2019/2020) the paper matches were classified as flammable solids and I regularly picked them up at Kroger and Safeway stores when someone had pilfered from a package or it was ripped open. a.co/d/3MxFkOK

If you are old enough to remember that all restaurants had paper match books. People would collect them and place them in big display pieces. When government stepped in and banned smoking in certain areas the match books all but disappeared. And that friends is the reason we can not have nice things.

You can still get them for free here in Nevada at a Casino. My mom used to collect match books, or the boxes of wooden matches when we were kids. She had like a 3 foot tall jar with a lid on it full of matches she had collected over the years. I think it was about 6-8 inches in diameter with a screw on lid. Used to have some kind of emblem embossed in the glass.

I have a matchbook from the Balinese Room somewhere, and one from the Shamrock Hotel. And a few others that are important to me. I have one from Ireland with one match left. I have a plastic case with about 20 matchbooks from 1976. The matchbooks are red white and blue. Everyone was celebrating something that isn't important anymore.

Everyone I have known that go to Vegas say how great it is and no one has ever said that they lost money. I wonder how they can afford to keep building those fancy hotels. I was there for 4 hours and lost every penny I had. It was well worth the cost for the education.

Similar to CrustyCat ‘s comment, the Casinos in Detroit still have the old style matchbooks available, but that’s about the only place I’ve seen them in a while. I used to have a bunch of them stuck all over the house when they were common giveaways. Probably still have quite a few around. I have a few in my collection that I saved because the inside of the cover was a little coupon for something like “Finest quality briar pipe, just send this coupon and $1.75”. I never really paid any attention to those things, but now I kind of wonder what would have shown up, if anything, if I had sent one in.

I just checked Google Street view...no pipe store there but they do body piercings and tattoos.
Would you settle for a shamrock tattoo and nipple rings?

Last time I got matches from the convenience store they were just plain white packaging this was a couple years ago. Last branded matches I got were from country squire but their a smoke shop so I'd be surprised if they didn't give away matches.

I never had those, but the little wooden Mexican matches were great.

I love collecting free stuff, matches, pens, swizzle sticks, coasters and ashtrays. I picked up a big book from The Peppermill Restaurant in the Vegas strip last weekend. We had a couple of versions of Dave and Lorie matches at our wedding. I have a match box collection and match strikers scattered around our home in Wisconsin.

Haven’t seen a matchbook in a long time. I use Diamond Greenlight wooden matches that come in 10-pax. Note: for ages these were $1.03 per 10-pack at Walmart. The last few I bought recently were $.97. Hooray for de-inflation! (Wonder of wonders.)
