Several years ago I tried my first burley blend, Haunted Bookshop, and absolutely hated everything about it. I proceeded to dump my bowl and then the tin.
However, after a couple of years of smoking Ruins of Windsor and other blends with burley that I greatly enjoyed I decided to give it a go again. I tried HH Burley Flake flake which I expected to like but I ended up loving it. I also enjoy PS41 Cube Cut and Newminster Norway Cut quite a bit. However, I have not found another bulk burley forward blend I have enjoyed. Haunted Bookshop still tastes like dirt and cigarette ash to me. No idea why.
In general, I try to smoke blends less than $3.50 an ounce in 4oz amounts. Any recommendations?
I also seem to get bit by some of the burley and Va blends much easier than I do with VaPers. Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong?
EDIT: I’ve also tried some codger blends but didn’t love any of them. I’ve heard granger is better than SWR, Velvet, and Carter Hall. Is this true?

IMHO, 5 Brothers is a better Burley than any of the "codger" blends. Less casing / topping and a true, natural Burley flavor.
For a more expensive treat now and then, try Solani Aged Burley Flake.

I’m not a huge fan of the solani product. The Wessex is ok but I prefer HH Burley Flake for whatever reason. It is pricey enough at around $8.28 an ounce last time I bought it. I think it might be because I’m still a VaPer smoker and it tastes more like a VaPer than a heavy burley blend.

I’m smoking a burley based blend from LJ Peretti, no. 52. It also has some Virginia and Oriental in the mix. Have you tried any of the Peretti burley offerings? The ones I’ve tried have been top notch.
I’m like you with Haunted Bookshop - I want to like it, but it just doesn’t match my taste.

In addition to Peretti, look at Uhle’s shop. Their burley blends are highly regarded.
