What was the very first pipe tobacco you smoked? Upon starting my pipe journey anew, after several years of discontinuance, I bought a new pipe and some tobacco at a store in the Springfield Mall, Northern Virginia. The tobacco was a bulk house blend called Checkmate and I believe it was Lane 1Q. Not the worst experience but definitely not the best. The next tobacco I purchased was one of those big ol' tins of Mac Baren Plumcake....man that tobacco bit the hell out of me. š Shortly thereafter, I graduated to McClelland blends...5100 Red Cake was nice.

Kentucky Club Mixture. I only smoked a few bowls of the pouch though. Holiday was next if I remember correctly.

Original Amphora in the red pouch back in '70 or '71. I knew an old guy that smoked it so I thought that I'd give it a try in my new brylon pipe. I didn't know anything about smoking a pipe then and I suffered front tongue bite constantly.

Some store blend from the pipe shop in Waco. (Most likely a Lane's blend.)

Some OTC cherry blend during my first, unsuccessful attempt at pipe smoking. For the second, and successful attempt, I upgraded (hahaha) to a bulk raspberry blend from the Tinderbox.

Wish I could remember. It was a Navy flake in a neat white box with a flip-lid. Bought it in a shop in Ithaca, NY. Smoked it in a cob.

Gawith & Hoggarth 'American Sweet Peach', it's meant to be a close match for Lane1Q, but have never tried L1Q, so not sure. The G&H offering is pretty darn good, a pleasant, well behaved aromatic.

Officerās Club. I cracked the tin, and my dad was sitting next to me. He loved aromatics, and I enjoyed every gloopy burning minute of it.

When I turned 16 years old....daddy-dearest said I could smoke a pipe.
Bought a pipe. Now, I was a man!
Loaded it with "Mixture No. 79".
I threw up.
"Troost" became my pipe's friend for a long time.

š¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø Some pouch from the rack in the party store where I bought the pipe. It was just another way enjoy tobacco and not a "hobby" or "lifestyle". Not really a special event for me so I didnāt take note. Also, it was 1983 at Michigan State Univ. which was ranked one of the top ten party schools at the time. If you remember the 80s, you didnāt experience the 80sā¦

First blend would have been a pouch from the old tobacco shop on University Avenue in Carbondale, Illinois, after I bought my first pipes (at a yard sale, as I've mentioned elsewhere). I don't really remember, but it was probably either Flying Dutchman or Borkum Riff. I was too shy to ask the proprietor for advice (a lost opportunity, as he must have had decades of experience and could have saved me lots of trial and error, and possibly steered me to some blends now gone) and went by the pictures and descriptions on the pouch.
