Good day, thank you for admitting me to join The Briar Patch. I'm a fairly long time pipe smoker. Dabbled with it from around 1995 and took it up more regularly around 2010(?), I guess. I'm one of those rare birds that prefer aros, burleys, and very light English blends. I'm retired and spend most of my days sketching and painting, (hence the name), reading, and dreaming about fly fishing. I have never really been fly fishing but have the equipment and can even do a bit of tying, but have never gotten out on the water... it's all so overwhelming. Perhaps this Fall I will make it happen.
Anyway, it's nice to be here and I'm looking forward to reading and getting to know everyone. Cheers!

Welcome from Chicago!
As it happens, I've always been attracted to the idea of fishing and have a little basic equipment (including an old Zebco rod and reel that we found in the house when we bought it in 1990) ... but there is really a lot to learn, and at 73 I'm doubtful that I'll find the time, even once I retire. Reading, writing, and music will fill whatever moments the youngest granddaughter and the house and yard work leave me.
Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the Patch and find useful information and engaging conversations.

I have a friend in North Georgia, a well known pipe smoker John Ruffino. I believe he goes fly fishing on his own property. Welcome to the Patch from NE Texas!

Welcome to the patch from Arizona. I have a few uncles that grew up on the Arkansas river in Colorado. All of them fished with worms or when there are active grasshoppers. They would knockem dead and in no time their creel would be full. Meanwhile, the guys in the Fancy LL Bean rigs would be toiling away, and coming up empty. There were plenty of great fly fishermen, but they seemed to skip the fancy clothes. lestrout is an avid fly fisherman ( the successful kind), and as was Bambooshank (RIP).

Adding welcome/greets from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Many years with various forums/chats, many gone, some with Farcebook type places now. No hunt, no fish, no own a gun
All 53 total pipes now have lucite stems. pipe/cigar since 1962, only heavy latakia blends, full stength cigars. Hope you find this place to your liking

Welcome. from Virginia. This past weekend I watched " A River Runs Through It ", and as much as I enjoyed the fishing on the movie, I bet the real thing would be a fine adventure.

Welcome from Southern New Jersey.
I have a place on the Delaware Bay and folks do a lot of surf fishing, lately they’ve been catching some nice striped bass. I keep telling myself I need to start fishing and have even collected a couple good rods and reels, but have yet to make a cast. I have a feeling once I get things lined up and started I’ll become obsessed. Seems a common progression with the fishing hobby.

I have found that the best way to watch a fly fishing tournament is by live stream.

I like it here. We will always have more drive-bys than stickers. It's the nature of the internet. planofman made an initial post and disappeared too.
