We had a lot of swimming holes growing up, and I remember at an early age an adult warning us about diving into water without knowing what may lie under the surface. That adult warned about becoming a paraplegic.

Not sire if that is exactly what happened to him, but whenever I hear of a diving accident, that comes to mind.

Yep, there was a kid in my neighborhood in Houston that happened to, and another neighbor of my sister in Kilgore that got paralyzed too. I was already having nightmares about polio and then this. I just didn't dive.
