And absolutely amazing how many survive until this day (many in name only of course!):
St Bruno
Bell's Three Nuns
Capstan Flake and Mixture
Gold Block
Player's Gold Leaf (RYO)
Escudo
John Cotton (recently revived)
Erinmore
Player's Navy Flake
Rich Dark Honeydew (now by GH)
Craven (RYO)
Balkan Sobranie
Player's Mixture
Three Castles (RYO)
Craven Mixture is gone but has been recreated by Mcclelland as 221-B Arcadia and by C&D as Yale Mixture (?) Park Drive (RYO - available in New Zealand) Skipper (Petersen & Sorensen)

Great thread - I would have been a regular escudo smoker and the hoarding would have started in 1945.

Well that was a cool post. Would you consider D&R's Three Sails a modern Three Castles? And what's with issuing a tobacco called Craven to soldiers?
Well, we have Deserter's Flake, Runaway Rum and Three White Flags on sale, which would the sergeant prefer today?
Mmm, just an ounce of POW's Delight and a tin of Frog on the Run, please.

Actually, you just made it better. A Frog is meant to be a derogatory term for a Frenchman, from the fact they eat disgusting foods like frogs. They call us Limeys, which is meant to a derogatory term for the British sailors eating limes. Calling us Limeys however, just amuses us because that's how the old sailors prevented scurvy, with the vitamin C in the limes. You bet I'm a Limey, scurvy-boy. The Brits and the Frogs have never gotten along; they're definitely an 'if it feels good do it' country, and not proper at all. Sometimes we fight each other, but we always team up every time the Germans invade a neighbor. PS Pretty sure you had Frog Morton on the Town, not least because there's no such thing as Frog on the Run

I'm into British TV big time and I know all about their nickname for the French, just didn't know WHY they called them frogs, so thanks for clearing that up for me! And turning it into joke WAS intentional on my part

Bumping this thread just because Jim managed to lay his hands on an 80 year old tobacco from this list which was distributed by the British Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes to the British Liberation Army in 1945: GLASGOW MIXTURE! Now that's cool A historical smoke.

What you spend on tobacco’s in the next year or so on the favorites you are still able to purchase and enjoy, will save you BIG bucks, coming in the very near future!!

That’s a list to bring tears to an old man’s eyes. Wish I had a warehouse filled with those old blends.

Wonder if those old blends are the same today....probably not, since, of course, the tobacco is different today.

I wonder what cigarettes where issued to the British troops. At the top of that list , if there is one, I'd say would be Player's Navy cut as well as Senior Service 555.
