I started smoking a pipe in 1968, at the age of 17. I did a lot of research at the time on all things pipes and tobacco. My first pipes were "drugstore pipes, but preferred what I thought were 'better grades', such as Kaywoodies and Webers. When I learned our new shopping mall was to have a pipe shop, I applied for a job before they were even open. Eventually, I became the manager and was exposed to brands I had coveted, but couldn't afford. The owner generously gave the employees a 40% discount, so I could now afford some really nice pipes. I remember my Punto Oro's cost me around $20 back then. I was blending tobacco for customers, polishing their pipes, and eventually replacing broken stems with bits and equipment purchased from J.H.Lowes (sp?). It was a wonderful job that I held into my college years, and met who would become my closest friends going forward. What a wonderful experience! Nipper

Welcome to the Patch from NE Texas! You're the same age as me, though I started the pipe much later.

Adding welcome & greets from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Pipe/cigars since 1963. All 53 pipes have lucite stems, all cigars "full". Hope you find this place to your liking

Another welcome from Arizona.
It sounds like you were working retail in tobacco’s heyday!
That must have been a great experience.
