Winter is approaching and I would very much like to smoke my pipe indoors without my wife killing me. Do you think any air purifiers work to completely eliminate the pipe odours? I was looking at the Blue Air purifiers. Don't get me wrong. I'm not afraid of my wife. Terrified is closer to the mark.

In my quite limited experience, no, nothing short of a commercial air exchange system will completely eliminate pipe odors.

I would dedicate a room for smoking, and if a waft of smoke offended her so be it.
I dunno, I busted my arse for too many years, provided my wife with a comfortable life and never mistreated her. Unless there is a verifiable reason that puts her life at peril, I am smoking my pipe.
Been married 42 years, and my wife was stricken with serious respiratory issues (valley fever) that resulted in a half inch hole in her lung which she recovered… I am sure she would prefer I not smoke, but she realizes I need my down time.
Not suggesting you start warfare, but the day I am terrified of smoking my pipe is the day I become a bachelor.
A less volitale approach, set that spare room aside with a dedicated air handling unit and call it good.

When we married almost 40 years ago, I got the better end of the deal. She is an amazing person and she is actually world famous in the scientific community. I won’t smoke in the house because she has asthma and I am reticent to cause her any discomfort aside from my ukulele playing. I’m hoping that with an air purifier, I can have my cake and eat it.Your post confirms that you too are an amazing person. Your posts are always interesting. Thanks so much for that.

Thanks, I didn’t mean to come across as harsh as rereading it seemed.
Health issues do trump all, and certainly needs to be a factor in such things.
Seriously though, if you can do so you can close the duct to a spare room so that it does not circulate through the house. We will be selling our two story in a few years and I am planning on having a dedicated smoking room/ study.
I honestly do not think an air purifier by itself can remove all smoke, but I have heard positive reviews on the rabbit air systems.

We have a catch all room which I have mostly taken over with tobacco related stuff. I live in hellizona, where July temps can push 120. Occasionally I smoke in that room.
Tips: Hard surfaces, leather, tile etc. Avoid cloth. After smoking, do not let ash remain in pipe or room. That needs to be dumped outside.
Equipment: For my 10 x 10 room, I have the ceiling fan going, door closed and a Rabbit air A2 with the smoke/carbon filter setup. If I let that run overnight, I do not smell smoke the next day.

My hobby/reloading room is where I do most of my indoor smoking. It is a basement bedroom that is highly insulated. It’s quiet and warm even with the heating vent closed. I have a small fan that I place in the window that vents the smoke. I also burn a smoker’s candle which helps. I can’t smell any smoke when I enter the room a day or two after. I’ve been doing this for about ten years and I don’t think the average person entering the room would know it was smoked in.

"she is actually world famous in the scientific community." Interesting! In what field? Dr. Bluma Brenner is internationally recognized for her studies identifying signature drug resistance pathways to HIV-1 antiviral drugs. In the last several years, she has received funding from Merck Sciences and Gilead characterizing drug resistance to novel HIV drugs, including islatravir, doravirine, bictegravir, dolutegravir and cabotegravir. She has also gained international recognition for her work using sequence datasets derived from the provincial drug resistance testing program to track HIV transmission dynamics at a population level. Her 2007 publication in the Journal of Immunology has been cited 801 times to date. Her current studies are aimed at applying genetic and cell-culture bases strategies to better understand HIV transmission and design proactive HIV treatment as prevention strategies. In recent collaborations with Nadine Kronfli, Milt Paliouris and Mark Trifiro, she is developing a novel plasmonic PCR strategy for use in point-of-care testing of HIV-1, hepatitis C and COVID-19. Google Dr. Bluma G. Brenner for more info. BTW she doesn't like the ukulele.

That's impressive! As someone who performs PCR testing and oversees POC testing, I find it fascinating. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. 👍😎

It can't be overstated how awful a death it is.

My wife doesn't mind my smoking at all. If she ever has a complaint it's usually about an aromatic like Molto Dolce or similar.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. 👍😎 Man, a hundred years ago, when I was doing molecular biology, PCR was the hottest, newest thing. We had one machine in our entire department at Mizzou, and you had to sign up a couple months in advance to use it.

Amen.
I saw about 5 people succumb to it, a co-worker named Bill looked like he was out of a horror movie when I had to say goodbye. It freaked me out.
Wizard’s wife is doing the Lord’s work, for sure.

My wife can tell when I open a jar that has perique inside. One of the blenders at Sutliff sent me a pound of Voodoo Queen one time, and she made a doll in his image and stuck pins in it!
