Don't ask me why but I am thinking about having a really expensive pipe commissioned for me. Has anyone heard of Downie pipes?
Is Stephen Downie reliable? How are his pipes?
Someone please talk me out of this.

Wasn't familiar with him, so I found his website. Nicely executed classic shapes and, umm, interesting/unique/bizarre, artistic pieces.

He’a definitely got some neat fantasy and figural/sculpture pipes. I’ve seen a couple of his beforehand. When you said really expensive, I was thinking in the realm of Todd Johnson. Todd Johnson on SmokingPipes
He had a huge sarcophagus pipe that recently sold for $8,000 on there. |

He's got a wide range of prices and some neat designs. Looks reasonable but I have no experience with him. I don't know if our Rdpipes is taking commissions or not. He's top notch and very reasonable.

If you really like his pipes and what he can do with a commission, I’d say go for it. As long as you’ve got the money to spare for it, it’s your treat.
$500 is expensive, I usually cut myself off in the range of $250-500. Beyond that, I just balk at the diminishing return of value in smoking a chunk of wood.

I am in the mind of at a certain point it is diminishing returns, I think a $500 price point makes sense for a pipe (although my high enders are at $400).
If someone wants to spend 10K on a pipe, more power to them, and the upper elite of pipe-makers agree!

The fear of disappointment is what prevented me from commissions in the past but now I’m fairly comfortable making requests from a couple of carvers.  |

If I ever decide I'm worthy of a 8 or 10k pipe, I'll set out on a quest for a Bo North...till then, I know of at least two members of our forum who make as good a pipe as I'll ever put a match to. |
