Who loves them? Who hates them?
If you are on the side of truth and goodness love them, do you have a favorite? Do you make your own? Share your good fruitcake times.

I miss my grandma Shigekos fruit cakes. We tried making them once but it wasn't nearly as good.

We've never tried homemade; I imagine it would be an art that would require experience and care.
As I might have telegraphed in my opening post, I love fruitcakes, even the cheap ones. But probably the best I have ever had was from the Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky (the home, by the way, of Thomas Merton for the last 27 years of his life). Made with Kentucky bourbon. Sublime. We haven't ordered for a few years (though well worth the cost, they aren't cheap), but I am tempted.

Yes, that's my understanding; making and selling the fruitcakes is one of the enterprises with which the monastery supports itself.

I've enjoyed Collins fruitcakes since I was a kid. Looks like someone is sending us a fruitcake from Monks Road Trappist, Kentucky. I've never tried any other kind except for a cheap grocery store one that waa awful.

I ate a fruitcake in the 60’s that was mailed to my grandma, I hated it. But I was a wee lad and probably thought a 3 Musketeers bar was the pinnacle of excellence.
Got a collins gifted cake a year ago and got recalibrated.

I think that was the case… foggy memory, but I got one from my cousin in San Antonio.

Not a fan of Fruitcake but Collins Street Bakery is very good.
I rarely eat sweets. Maybe four times a year including the Holidays.

(Sorry, couldn't resist. Not that I tried very hard.)

We got the Gethsemane fruitcake yesterday and tried it last night. It's not bad, but I have only had Collins Street in the past and I thought it was light on nuts and fruit. It has a light bourbon flavor that's neither good or bad. Wife and son liked it. I thought it was OK.
