Maggie, I wouldn't be afraid of fixing up an old estate pipe like that if it were merely a chip or gouge in the stummel somewhere. This one, however, looks like that gouge is part of a crack that goes all the way through the wall and into the chamber of the bowl. Or it may have actually started there, dunno? I'd shoot the seller a question and ask if that gouge on the left side of the bowl is indeed a crack all the way through. If there is, I'd pass. If not, give it a whirl. But then again, I am partial to the Horn, Zulu & Yacht style pipes.

Saw a couple cracks on top which would concern me more about bowl condition. Hard to go wrong for the price but I'd probably pass on this one. Shouldn't be too hard to find one this shape at a good price you can be more confident in with a little patience - JMHO.

IMHO, Pass you're buying trouble. If you're buying it to learn to to fix pipes that's different. You can do better.

This is a "Bruyere Garantie" which means it is a very basic and cheap pipe from France. I can see a LOT of filler here and as it looks a varnish coat as well. Like Brad said: If you´re looking for a cheapo to learn fixing pipes this is probably ok but still too expensive IMHO. I would pass on that one....
