Well we got our new cobs planted this evening. They should be ready for harvest late October to the middle of November. Might have enough for some cobfoolery.

I have 23 seeds planted. If I get half I'll be in good shape. Now for the next few months will have to water and feed them this desert can get a little dry in the summer. Also last night was the first night of a full moon.
Will have to come up with a couple of designs for the contest. Thinking about trying my hand at a Cutty. And might pull out the wood lathe to make a group 8 reverse calabash depending on the cob size.

I assume those are the same Corn seed that Missuri Meerschaum uses? Either way that is really neat.

My seeds won't go in for about another 2 weeks. Soil temp is still too low but I just picked up some Calcium Nitrate in anticipation. Corn benefits greatly from a split application of Nitrogen.

Update: after seeds started to grow I found I only planted 18 seeds. As things look now I will have 15 plants and have no idea of how many ears will come out. So things are one step closer to the new cobs.

How'd everyone's cobs turn out? I have 18 in my basement, drying. I'll wait till spring to make a few and then store the rest for a good year to get really dry.

The monsoon storms from Mexico thrashed John R’s crop.

Yup, due to the variable winds during the summer monsoons my crop got destroyed. Here at my place I can have winds from 20mph to 70mph gusts. And sometimes we get some good microbursts.

Darn! I sure wish we could find a reasonable source for cobs. I can't even find ear feed corn here anymore. I asked Missouri Meerschaum if I could buy unfinished bowls, they said 'sure'. Thirty bucks each! I can buy 10 reject pipes for 33. Sigh... I want to make some Falcon bowls and I think I will just buy 10 more reject MM pipes, cut them off and make hardwood plugs for the bottom section.
