How would those of you who have smoked McCranies Red Ribbon rank the different vintages? I have only smoked two so far 1983 and 1996. I thought the 83 was much better than the 96. Smooth and sweet with no bitterness. The 96 was slightly bitter. It is my understanding that there is a 2000, 2008 and I just found out a new 2011 vintage has been released.

I've had the 2000 and 2008 ... both fantastic, tangy, Red Va's.
Edit: Those were both the Flake version ... never had the ribbon.

Thumbs up on 2008, great stuff; however, it's the only one I've experienced. Thanks for the heads up on the 2011.

I have now smoked thru half a tin of the 2000. Comes in second behind the 83'. I have the 2008 and 2011 in the cellar and I will try those out someday. I would recommend the 83' and 2000 very highly, not so much on the 96'.

I did not know that McCrainie's has released a 2011. I'll need to buy some of that. I've smoked the '83, '96, 2000, and the 2008. I found the 1996 to be the most enjoyable so far, with the 2008 right behind it. The 2000 is a bit more delicate than the 1996 or the 2008. All of them are great. The 1983 was the most disappointing, but it's always possible that it had not aged well in the tin. It tasted distinctly "past it".

Up until the whole Red Cake 5100 fiasco, I had never even heard of McCranie's, let alone their Red Ribbon. As luck would have it I happened upon 5 tins of it today while visiting the McCranie's shop in Cornelius NC. The Tins are dated 99 and the label states it's from Prime 1983 Red Virginias. So, after pizza and a movie with Blondie this evening, I decided to pop open one of the tins and giver er a whirl... The Dr. Grabow CDL is lovin this blend, as am I. ;-) Being as I have never tried any other vintage, I don't have anything to compare it to, regardless, it is an excellent smoke. Cheers

I have the 2008, but waiting a while to open another tin. The first 2008 was not harsh at all, nice and sweet with no bite and the right moisture level. McCranie’s is an outstanding B&M to do business with👍 The first time I ever ordered over the phone this gentleman didn’t know me at all and tells me your order will be shipped later in the day. I said.”you didn’t ask for my credit card info. “. His response “ don’t worry I will send an invoice and pay me once you receive your order “. How many online retailers or B&M’s would do that....I’ve never came across one prior. That alone impressed me👌👍👍

Saddens me that a business like this is so adversely affected by McClelland’s closure. What was a ripple to us, was a wave to them.

Sadly none of those will be available anymore after they sell existing stock as that blend was made by McClellands.

I used to order some of their aromatics many years ago--back in the old days when you had to mail a check or money order along with an order form clipped from a pipe smoking magazine or one of their mailers....

From Jesse:
I think that this sometimes happens more than ever gets mentioned....I have smoked some aged Virginia that had been lesser than a younger blend that I smoked at the same time.
I hear clanging pitchforks and the crackle of torches approaching... “Burn the heretic!”

I ordered a pair of x-ray glasses when I was in the 7th grade hoping to get a peek at whatever was in Kathleen O'Connor's blouse. I am sorry to report only disappointment with that purchase.....

That was the first thing that came to my mind when I mentioned it....A lot of boys learned early, about truth in advertising.
