That's nice of them to go to the trouble. Many people think it's all about grilling and drinking beer. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that but remember WHY your doing it. Today, I remember the stories of my Great Uncle Victor who died at Pearl Harbor. He was also known to enjoy a pipe now and then with my Uncle Frank who inspired my pipe smoking.

In my father's family, a relative of his mother was in the Civil War. He was injured and captured, I actually met a gentleman online 15 years ago who was an amateur historian and in comparing notes learned that my relative and his great-great-grandfather had been at the infirmary at Andersonville together. From there my relative was moved farther south in a POW camp. At the end of the war he was put on a ship -- the Sultana -- that was headed up the Mississippi River. At every port passangers and more POWs were put on the ship. Near Memphis the ship blew up, only about 1/3 of the people survived. My relative was not one of them. Not the usual veteran thought of on this day, but he will always be remembered by our family. It was quite a few years after I was married that we learned of this incident, and that it took place on April 27, 1865. April 27 is my anniversary. Interesting coincidence.

i think that if we truly saw the tenuous link between our existence, and that of an ancestor that narrowly escaped death fighting off despots and tyrants, we would be more appreciative of what Memorial day really signifies....Obviously, Memorial day is distictly American, but in light of the fact that so many share in the struggle over time and geography, hat's off to all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to make the world a better place.

As a veteran I want to thank all of you for your kind and respectful comments. To your point boss I'd like to offer this inspiring 10 minute video from a really great guy. I've read pretty much everything Andy has written and even had the honor of having dinner with him about 10 years ago.

Thank you Dino, that certainly put an exclamation point where and exclamation point needed to be deposited! I will certainly look up more of Andy's videos. As I play with my granddaughter daily and spend time tutoring the 3 year old, I often think of: But I would be remiss if I didn't bring it back to thinking of all that those that served our country and put themselves in a place where a lone wooden cross on a distant shore would be all that marked their existence gave selflessly so that I could live in freedom...truly, Uncommon valor is a common virtue. Daily, look at this and give a nod.... s27.photobucket.com/user/Trailboss60/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-05/60B2BA44-397E-436F-B8D0-70F685764DDE_zpscypq7qs6.jpg.htmlAnd that goes for Korean, Vietnam, desert Storm, Iraqi freedom, and those that may have not lost their lives in foreign conflicts, but did so in service to the freedoms that I often take for granted.
