I imagine most of you have already determined I'm kind of unique, but in some ways I'm also quite the odd duck. I imagine I come across as an outgoing people person on the forum, but that is because I'm in my element here -- I am extremely comfortable writing, I'm not very comfortable in face to face conversations, though once I get to know someone and depending on how familiar we get I can get to the stage where I could talk your ear off, but that takes awhile. My major quirk, however, is that I don't use the telephone. The thought of usiing the phone creates a great deal of anxiety in me. People call my phone, I let it go to voice mail, listen to the message and then text them or email them, lol. My friends know not to call, they text. Yes, it's extremely odd for a female not to be addicted to talking on the phone, but I'm not a typical female (and hubby says that's what he loves about me. lol) So, if the occasion would ever come up and I decline to talk to any of you on the phone, please know it's nothing personal, that I actually hate to do that, but that in most situations I just can't work up the nerve to talk on the phone, which is another reason why I will never call in an order to P&C to get a special deal. I hate actually admitting this, because people just don't seem to understand. If I didn't have to carry a cell phone for emergencies (in case I break down somewhere) I wouldn't even own one, but I can't avoid it all the time, just most of the time. I am beginning to make plans so that I can hit a couple pipe shows next year, and hopefully I can meet up with some of you and we can talk in person -- just expect short answers for the first 10 minutes or so, lol.

That's not strange at all Ma'am. Now on the other hand I'm the strange one here if anyone is because I'm literally a hermit and don't like people in general and stay away from them as much as possible. I won't leave the house for overnight stays (Agoraphobic) but, enjoy talking on the phone to friends but, hate answering it. I'm a extreme perfectionist so nothing I do ever pleases me completely and won't let anyone do anything for me cause I know it won't be done good enough. I must always do things when they need doing no matter what I'm doing at the time, so many times I'm trying to do 2 or 3 things at once. And I never purchase anything until what I have dies to the point I can't fix it no matter how antiquated it is. I won't have a cellphone or any of those other nonsense devices they tell you, you have to have, hell half my phones have dials (remember them?). And to top it all off, unlike a lot of people today you can lay money down that what I say I'll do is what I'll do, my word is written in stone. And I treat everyone with respect until they prove they don't deserve it, not like most that say they'll only give you respect when you've earn it crapolla. And that's only a little glimpse into my life. So whenever you think your weird, think again.

We all suffer from terminal uniqueness!!! Or at least in my book we do.

To each his/her own. No worries here (although I am a compulsive worrier). I promise I won't call you Maggie

That doesn't sound weird to me at all. If we had the money to buy a cabin on a wooded hillside accessible only by horse, hubby would jump on it in a heartbeat. He would prefer to be 20 miles away from the nearest human (except for me, of course). Hubby is also a perfectionist, so I'm familiar with that. It's nice to know people whose word is their bond. I prefer the old fashioned ways!

Maggie, the only person important on your path is you. If others are not able to accept you for who you are then piss on then if they can't take a joke.

I'm much the same way, and like to be alone a lot. It is curious to me how most people view a ringing phone as an ORDER; I call it a request.
When I was doing my techy stuff, I had a nervous and needy girl that would create a ticket: the electronical device is broken. This would send me an email, and an alert on my phone that I'd received a ticket. Then she'd call me on my cell to tell me she'd sent in a ticket. I had to answer my work phone. I tried to tell her, look Wendy, you don't have to call me to say you've sent in a ticket, just text me (which I can ignore until I'm ready to deal with it).
She said ok sure, and I thought problem fixed. Then, she would call me on the phone to tell me she was about to text me that she'd emailed me a ticket.
fudge.
When you text or email me, I can wait to compose my answer, so I say what I mean. If I am expected to answer the phone, I can't be truly alone; you can come in uninvited at any time. I get the feeling the percentage of pipe smokers that are loners is higher than the general population.
You're not weird, you're unique.

Here's one from my good old grandpa: "Always remember that you are unique ... just like everyone else"

agreed! some people don't get it, probably because they have a NEED for the human contact of hearing the voice of that person to be sure contact was actually made. I don't let everyone who knocks on my door into my house, so what sense does it make that I would answer every phone call. (In fact, I don't always answer my door, lol) It reminds me of an episode of The Big Bang Theory where Leonard isn't answering his phone because he doesn't want to talk to the person calling and Sheldon is going nuts because he isn't answering it because it's "social protocol." So many people are like that. I like my personal space and I'm selective about who gets in and when. I hate being put on the spot, and in those situations tend to freeze. I like to have time to read thoroughly what I'm reading and think about it, then consider how to respond. I like to sit back, listen and observe. My minor in college was counseling/psychology, so I like to study and attempt to understand people. The girl you mentioned, I'm already working through theories on her, lol.

That same girl sent me an email once, and I quote: We think we've lost a file. We're not sure there was a file, but we think there was a file. Can you help us?
Err...yeah Wendy, search the servers for 'file'. Maybe there's one on there.
She called me another time, and I'm trying to figure out what her issue is, and finally got her to agree to this: So, what you're saying is, absolutely everything's working perfectly, but you want me to check on it??
Well, um, yeah.
Ok Wendy, I'll 'check on it'. Hey Kyle, has that lady selling the homemade tamales come by yet?

It's been a long path but I've finally gotten to a comfortable place for myself. I struggled growing up because i didn't fit in with everyone else, I didn't have the same interests, I thought differently, etc. Only in the past few years have I realized, I am an introvert and there isn't anything wrong with me I'm just different than the majority of the population. I need lots of alone time, I don't cope well with loud, busy situations, I need a handful of close, intimate friends rather than dozens of people I party with. However, I thrive in internet situations, because I interact on my terms, have time to think before responding, etc. I would probably go nuts if I couldn't be online interacting with my common interest communities. The Briar Patch is a special place for me, a safe place

Look up the term loner or lone wolf. That has been my life for a couple or three decades. Thanks to childhood events.

She had to be blonde. Tell me she was blonde. Reminds me of a joke I read several years ago. This lady calls the tech department to say her computer wouldn't come on. The IT guy walks her through the drill -- check that it's plugged in, all cords connected, etc., etc. and she answers everything yes, then he asks her to check the back of the hard drive for a model number or something and she says she can't read it, he asks why and she says the lights aren't on, he asks why and she says the power is out. He tells her to box it up and send the computer to them. She says, "Is it that bad?" and he says, Yes, it's that bad. LOL.
Hubby puts in tickets for his problems but the help desk ignores him. He sent out a nasty email yesterday because the last ticket he submitted was just marked as completed and they haven't touched his laptop. We'll see how that goes today.

completely understand. i was a bubbly, talkative child in grade school, then came junior high and I haven't been that way since. interesting how our childhoods shape the rest of our lives. BUT, if I had been that effervescent personality in college hubby probably would have never chased me down, so that was worth it!

Wasn't blonde. Was the office manager's assistant at a law firm, and under a lot of pressure from the lawyers. Not the ideal position for a nervous girl.
Re: your electricity story, one time another law firm was down. We confirmed it and three of us went out after hours (we didn't get paid for overtime). We found several electrical outlets in the server room were cold, and we didn't have enough working outlets to get everything plugged in. I'm down at Frys looking for adapters and get a call from the guys.
Turns out they'd made some changes to the phone system in the receptionist's area, for which the phone guys needed the electricity to be off. One of the partners just found the breaker box and started flipping shite off until the receptionist's area went down. Turned out servers need electricity, too.

some people should not be left without supervision.

Doesn´t sound at all weird to me cause I can find myself in a lot of this too. I am an "introvert extrovert" and have my spells of not answering calls or even emails, whatsapps or SMS. We live in weird times and a bit always rubs off....

Just depends on who I am with. But alot of that comes from previously being in the closet over being transgender and being paranoid about losing supposed friends. But loke my therapist and good friend Emily told me well if they dont accept you for who you are they are not your friend. Been alot less introverted over the last 6 months. Had alot of trust issues amd baggage from childhood. So yeah its nice to find your tribe so to speak.

I have a phone and I just don't answer the damn thing . Just leave a voice mail maybe I'll call . My idea of communication is two people sitting in comfortable chairs and grunting once in a while . You may also text me , in return you will get a one or two line reply . If you email me I will do my best to reply with a nice letter that is not spell checked or laid out in proper form . If you stop by I will serve you the best cup of coffee you ever had and whip up dinner that will have you raving to your friends for months .

yep, I call those "nesting" times. I shut out the world, curl up in comfy clothes and blankies and binge watch my favorite shows/movies. Sometimes I even need time away from hubby -- usually his annual training takes care of that, lol.
